Chapter 1376: That's Right, This Is a Trap
In the temporary Common Room on the second floor of Hogwarts Castle late at night, several Aurors assigned to remain at the school were quietly discussing the absurd events of the day.
Kidnapping families to threaten students?
Only Death Eaters shameless enough to have no regard for dignity could do something like that!
Yet the most absurd part was that they, Aurors who had made it their duty to capture Dark wizards, had actually become accomplices to the Death Eaters committing those atrocities.
"Perhaps we were wrong from the very beginning," a middle-aged Auror suddenly said.
"We weren't wrong." Gavender impatiently cut him off. "We were merely carrying out the Ministry of Magic's orders. Even if someone was wrong, it was the Ministry."
"That's right. Our loyalty is to the Ministry of Magic, not Lord Voldemort," Dawlish agreed. This was, in fact, the main reason many Aurors had remained at the Ministry.
At the very least, that superficial justification allowed them to stay at the Ministry with a clear conscience. As for whether Lord Voldemort or the Death Eaters were actually commanding them, that did not matter.
"You should know perfectly well that you're only deceiving yourselves."
"Calm down, Prout."
"Calm down? Look at the wonderful things we've done—kidnapping families to threaten students?" The Auror named Prout roared at his colleagues. "Since when have Aurors become dogs at the Death Eaters' feet?"
The Aurors who had been about to say something all fell silent.
Prout's words had deeply wounded everyone present, shattering their defenses on the spot.
That was right. Aurors were now like dogs kept by Death Eaters, able only to obey their commands and wag their tails humbly. This was undoubtedly intolerable to many Aurors who prided themselves on justice.
