As one of the few remaining wandmakers in Europe, Ollivander had fled with his family as soon as he learned that his colleagues around him had met with misfortune.
Yet one night, when he opened his door and saw Voldemort in a black cloak, his composure completely collapsed.
Still, the wandmaker forced down his fear, invited Voldemort inside to talk, and asked what he wanted.
When Voldemort took out the Deathstick and asked him to appraise it, the wandmaker suppressed his terror and carefully inspected it before giving his conclusion: fake?

Although Voldemort had expected it, hearing the wandmaker say it aloud still left him unable to suppress the fury in his heart.
Just as he was about to vent his anger on the wandmaker before him, he heard the trembling voice continue, "I don't know why you believe this to be the legendary Deathstick, but I can say with certainty that it is merely a wand made not long ago. A professional wandmaker can tell from certain subtle traces that this wand was recently crafted. However, its maker must have been quite exceptional. There are very few wandmakers of that caliber left in Europe today."
Perhaps to save his own life, the nearly middle-aged Ollivander was doing everything he could to demonstrate his value to Voldemort, lest the Dark
