To ensure the fairness and impartiality of this Triwizard Tournament, the three Champions had each signed a Magical Contract on the night they were selected by the Goblet of Fire. It was meant to oversee the tournament and ensure that no one cheated during the competition.
Thus, aside from the Ministry of Magic, which was responsible for hosting the Triwizard Tournament, not even the three headmasters knew anything about the First Task.
Even if they did know, it would have been useless. Revealing information to the Champions in advance would only cause them to violate that fair and impartial contract. It simply was not worth it.
Moreover, the three headmasters had great confidence in the Champions chosen by their schools. They believed the Champions could achieve good results without cheating, so no one was willing to take the risk of being eliminated early.

When Headmistress McGonagall returned from outside, her expression had been terrible. She only told Daphne to pass along the message that Alice should forfeit immediately if the competition became too dangerous, then hurried off again to discuss the matter with the other headmasters.
Headmistress McGonagall was clearly not the only one in a foul mood. According to the other Champions she had just met, the three headmasters had disappeared early that morning for some unknown reason.
"The First Task must be dangerous."
Headmistress McGonagall's warning said it all.
"More than dangerous. I've never seen Madame Maxime so furious." Matthew glanced at the Durmstrang deputy headmaster leading them ahead and exchanged information with his two companions in somewhat halting speech.
"This is the road to the school's Back Mountain."
