At 1:30 in the afternoon, Xue Jing arrived at school.
Just like that morning, he did not head straight to his classroom. Instead, he entered Qing Da's campus again and made his way to the Qing Da Library.
Compared to the sparse crowds that morning, the library was quite full now. Still, everyone was quiet, and the only sounds were mostly the turning of pages.
Xue Jing's arrival drew many students' attention. A short-haired girl sitting in the lounge area with an extracurricular book in her hands looked at Xue Jing in his affiliated high school uniform with sparkling eyes and whispered excitedly to her best friend beside her.
"Look, look! That little brother is so handsome!"
"Should we go ask for his WeChat?"
Her friend stared at Xue Jing as she teased, "Don't you like older guys? Why are you eyeing a little puppy from the affiliated high school?"
"Even if you don't like sweets, you'd still drool when you came across a top-tier dessert like that!" The short-haired girl's eyes gleamed.
"Come on, come on, I'll go ask for his WeChat. You stand beside me and give me courage..."
As she spoke, she rose from her chair.
The chair scraped against the floor, producing a somewhat sharp sound.
Seemingly hearing the commotion, Xue Jing turned his head and looked at the short-haired girl.
"..."
When she was swept by those cool, detached eyes, it felt as if a basin of icy water had been poured over her head. A chill ran from her scalp to her heels, and the desire in her heart vanished completely in an instant.
Only after Xue Jing went upstairs and disappeared from her sight did the short-haired girl suddenly clutch her ample chest and gasp for breath like a drowning victim who had just been dragged ashore.
Her best friend froze for a moment, then immediately patted her back to help her catch her breath. "What's wrong, Xiao Lin? Are you okay?"
The ponytailed girl named Xiao Lin said with lingering fear, "I don't know why, but that little brother... seems dangerous. I'd better not ask for his WeChat."
Unaware of the psychological damage his careless glance had caused, Xue Jing went straight up to the seventh floor.
The seventh floor was as deserted as ever, forming a stark contrast to the lively first six floors. There was only one girl sitting upright in an old chair, holding a book. Her posture was so perfectly proper that there was not a single fault to pick at, stretching her light-blue skinny jeans tight over her figure like a ripe peach.
It was the same girl Xue Jing had encountered in the same spot that morning.
Unlike that morning, after seeing Xue Jing, the girl nodded to him. Her waist-length High Ponytail swayed gently, and a faint smile curved her clean, delicate face.
Xue Jing smiled without saying anything and nodded back at her.
He found this kind of silent acquaintance through nods rather interesting.
Entering the shelves, Xue Jing began searching for clues that might be related to Divinity Substance.
Under the dim yellow lights, Xue Jing and the girl attended to their own business, clearly separate from each other. They looked like two unrelated passersby, yet there was an inexplicably natural sense of harmony between them.
An hour later, Xue Jing had learned a great deal of things ordinary people did not know, but he still had no clue about Divinity Substance.
"I should go to class first."
Shaking his head, Xue Jing returned the book in his hand to the shelf and left the library.
The silent seventh floor was left with only the girl, like a lonely earthbound spirit imprisoned there. Only the occasional sound of turning pages proved that she was a real person.
When Xue Jing entered his classroom, he found that the desk and chair Pei Youguang had scratched up had been replaced with an intact set.
"It was that second-year Pei Youguang. He brought these over and replaced your desk and chair," a classmate who had arrived early explained from nearby.
"I see," Xue Jing replied.
He did not particularly care. Scratched or not, a desk and chair were still usable. However, dirty things had been stuffed into the drawer of that scratched-up set, so replacing them was for the best.
Pei Youguang knew how to behave.
Xue Jing thought.
His heartfelt lesson had not been wasted on him.
The four afternoon classes soon passed. Xue Jing greeted Li Ge, saying he had something to take care of and telling him to head home first.
He then packed up his textbooks, slung his backpack over one shoulder, and left the third teaching building where his class was located.
The affiliated high school had three teaching buildings, one for each grade, with twenty classes per grade.
Xue Jing went to the corridor of the second teaching building, where the second-years studied. Leaning against a pillar by the entrance, he took out his phone and watched explanatory videos about martial arts while he waited.
He was quite eye-catching. The second-year students leaving the building all lingered their gazes on him to varying degrees.
He did not wait long before a plump youth surrounded by a crowd of lackeys came out. His nose and eyes were wrapped in bandages, making him look like a mummy.
It was Pei Youguang.
The lackeys beside him also had injuries to varying degrees, though none as serious as Pei Youguang's.
The moment he saw Xue Jing, Pei Youguang first froze, then jogged over eagerly. "Hey, Brother Jing, were you waiting for me?"
His behavior immediately stunned the second-year students around them.
"Is that Pei Youguang?"
"Huh? That's Pei Youguang? He's wrapped up like a mummy—I didn't recognize him."
"Who's that guy? Why does Pei Youguang seem to be... sucking up to him?"
"That's third-year Xue Jing! I saw him this morning. Zhou Juncheng called him out at the school gate, and I thought Pei Youguang was going to beat him up. Why does he look completely fine..."
"You idiot, Pei Youguang is already in that state. He obviously failed to beat someone up and got beaten instead."
"What happened? Didn't Pei Youguang practice martial arts? How did he get beaten up that badly?"
Fragmented discussions drifted over from the surroundings, and all the students wore excited expressions as though they had just stumbled upon some juicy gossip.
This school bully had always been unpopular. Seeing that he seemed to have gotten the short end of the stick made everyone rather happy.
"Serves him right. He's always bullying people—looks like he finally kicked an iron plate!"
"Someone can finally put him in his place."
"I'm in the same class as Pei Youguang. This morning, he was still saying he'd make Xue Jing pay. Apparently, it was because Lin Shi Yu likes Xue Jing... Look, Lin Shi Yu is coming out."
The younger student Lin Shi Yu emerged from the teaching building in her uniform skirt, her long, straight legs gleaming beneath the sunset. The moment she saw Xue Jing, a trace of embarrassment appeared on her pretty face.
She had just been rejected after confessing to him that morning, and now she had run into him again. She was immediately left awkward.
Fortunately, Xue Jing did not even look at her, as though he had not noticed her at all. Though his indifference made her feel rather dejected, she also could not help letting out a breath of relief.
Lin Shi Yu hurriedly grabbed her backpack, took her best friend's hand, and jogged away.
"Brother Jing, you came to learn force transmission from me, right? Come on, let's go to my house. My home is pretty big, and we basically have all the equipment used for martial arts training at a dojo..."
As Pei Youguang spoke, he gestured with his one remaining unbandaged eye at a lackey beside him.
The lackey immediately understood and stepped forward eagerly. "Brother Jing, let me carry your backpack for you."
"Mm, let's go." Xue Jing smiled, handed his backpack to the lackey, and followed Pei Youguang out of the school.
