Money to Buy Your Life
After following Pei Youguang through another complete Breathing Method session, Xue Jing had thoroughly memorized every detail and step of the method.
This session left him with the same symptoms as the first—very uncomfortable—but it was a little better than before. He seemed to have adapted somewhat.
Having practiced the Breathing Method twice in a row, Pei Youguang was feeling a little unwell too. He rubbed his head and said in amazement,
"Not only did you successfully complete the cycle on your first try, you even did it twice in a row..."
"If the old master at the dojo found out, his jaw would probably hit the floor."
Xue Jing slowly settled the strain from the Breathing Method and said, "Youguang, thanks for this."
Pei Youguang was flattered and hurriedly replied, "Ah, what're you thanking me for? You letting me teach you is giving me face, Brother Jing..."
Though his words carried a hint of flattery, he genuinely felt that way.
With talent and natural aptitude like Xue Jing's, anyone could tell he had a boundless future ahead of him. Being able to earn even a little of the debt owed to a teacher from Xue Jing while he was still unknown made Pei Youguang feel as though he had struck gold.
This basic Breathing Method was hardly worth anything. Using it to form a connection with someone destined for greatness was an absolute steal.
Pei Youguang sighed. "It's a shame I don't have any of the dojo's secret medicine here. The Breathing Method works best when practiced alongside it. The old master called that process 'blood cleansing'..."
"He said blood is the body's fundamental source of power. The purer and better the blood, the more power it can provide. Every dojo and martial arts school has its own Blood Cleansing Secret Method. If you join a dojo someday, Brother Jing, you might get access to one."
As he listened, Xue Jing opened his panel for a look.
You completed one Breathing Method practice session. Fitness experience +16 You completed one Breathing Method practice session. Fitness experience +16 Fitness Lv. 2 (463/500)
Two runs of the Breathing Method had raised his Fitness experience by more than thirty points?
Pei Youguang had said the Breathing Method could improve physical fitness, but Xue Jing had not expected the results to be this good.
"A complete Breathing Method cycle takes around fifteen minutes. That means over sixty points an hour."
By comparison, dedicated fitness training could earn around a hundred Fitness experience points per hour.
The Breathing Method seemed less efficient than working out specifically, but that was not how he should look at it.
Working out required dedicated equipment and a proper setting, while the Breathing Method could be practiced anytime, anywhere!
If he could keep the Breathing Method running twenty-four hours a day, then simply "idling" for a day would earn him more than fourteen hundred Fitness experience points!
What an absurd increase! Of course, that was impossible for now. The Breathing Method put an immense burden on the body. After two complete cycles in a row, he already felt unable to continue for the time being. Otherwise, he would truly injure himself.
Still, no matter what, he was very satisfied to have gained a way to increase his Fitness experience anytime and anywhere.
About another twenty minutes passed before Xue Jing felt he had fully recovered.
He stood up and looked around. Then his eyes suddenly lit up as he spotted a machine in the corner.
Noticing his gaze, Pei Youguang smiled. "That's a strength tester. Want to give it a try, Brother Jing?"
Xue Jing nodded.
"Alright, I'll turn it on for you."
He ran behind the strength tester and pressed a button. The screen on its frame lit up, displaying the previous test result.
1472N.
"This machine uses N as its unit, which means Newtons," Pei Youguang explained.
"1,472 Newtons converts to roughly 150 kilograms, which is easier to understand."
Pei Youguang looked a little smug. "That's what I got when I used Moving Strength the day before yesterday. Pretty fierce, right?"
Xue Jing smiled. "Yeah, pretty fierce."
After a pause, he said, "Let me try."
Pei Youguang immediately stepped aside.
Xue Jing walked forward, took his stance, and drew a deep breath. He aimed at the slightly worn leather pad on the strength tester and threw a fierce straight punch! Bang!!
A thunderous impact rang out. The entire heavy strength tester shook slightly, and the numbers on the screen began jumping rapidly before finally stopping.
1773N.
Pei Youguang's eyes widened slightly.
"What the hell!?"
1,773 Newtons converted to roughly 181 kilograms.
"Brother Jing, don't tell me you've actually trained before and came here just to fool me?"
Pei Youguang clicked his tongue in amazement.
"No Moving Strength, just raw brute force, and you hit 1,773 Newtons—that's already 180 kilograms, isn't it? That's insane!"
He touched his bandaged nose. "No wonder you nearly sent my nose flying at noon..."
Xue Jing laughed. "So? Not bad, right?"
Pei Youguang nodded repeatedly. "It's way more than not bad, bro. Once you learn Moving Strength, you can go take the professional Martial Artist ranking test immediately."
Xue Jing did not respond. Instead, he looked at another machine nearby, one covered in buttons, and asked curiously, "What's that?"
Pei Youguang smiled. "That's for reaction training. See all those buttons? It's like Whac-A-Mole. Whichever button lights up, you press it immediately. The faster, the better..."
Xue Jing stayed at Pei Youguang's house until nearly eight in the evening. After agreeing that he would come by often during this period, he finally said goodbye and left.
Before he left, Pei Youguang asked if tomorrow morning's self-criticism recital could be waived, but Xue Jing refused.
When he had first made Pei Youguang recite it, he had mostly wanted to mess with the school bully. But now, he genuinely wanted what was best for him.
Carrying the reputation of a murderer and rapist was no joke.
Pei Youguang was too young to understand the consequences. Or perhaps he vaguely understood them but had given up on himself for some reason. Xue Jing, however, did not want to see him ruin his life because of it.
He had made many mistakes before, but so long as he had not committed an absolute, unforgivable wrong, he still had a chance to correct himself.
Xue Jing walked down the street. Though it was only eight at night, this street in the South District was already very quiet. Only a scattering of shops still had their lights on.
The evening breeze swept through, sending bottles, cans, newspapers, and plastic bags skittering about. Their rustling echoed along the silent street.
With his backpack slung over one shoulder, Xue Jing walked naturally toward the nearest bus stop.
But in an alley several dozen meters behind him, several figures hid in the shadows, watching his back with ill intent.
One of them, a man with a streak of white-dyed hair at the front, chuckled. "What luck. We actually ran into a fat sheep this late at night. Judging by that uniform, he's from Qing Da Affiliated High School?"
Standing among them was a middle-aged man with a long scar across his right cheek. He took a deep drag from his cigarette and slowly exhaled. He wore a sleeveless black undershirt, and a dragon tattoo stretched across his muscular right arm and shoulder.
"Wandering around Razor Gang territory this late at night without leaving something behind? That won't do."
"If he can afford Affiliated High School's tuition, then he should be able to afford money to buy his life, right?"
