Ch. 961Prelude to the Great War
Chapter Summary: “Prelude to the Great Battle”
Key Plot Points and Events
Nahiri tests Greyas through combat.
Upon meeting Nicol Bolas’s son, the Dark Prince Greyas, the Gravelite Sorceress Nahiri immediately attacks him. She explains that swordplay is her preferred way of establishing trust, claiming that combat reveals a person’s true nature more honestly than words.
Greyas is initially overwhelmed.
Nahiri’s advanced Gravelite abilities allow her to construct platforms, launch attacks from unpredictable angles, and seal Greyas’s magical perception and precognitive abilities. His demigod powers and enhanced warrior skills prove largely ineffective, and he regrets not learning more swordsmanship from Zuo Si.
Greyas calls on Shar’s power.
Near defeat, Greyas opens a larger channel to the Goddess of the Night, Shar. Using his own blood as an anchor, he transforms into a vast field of darkness and attacks Nahiri with black flames. This temporarily changes the battle’s momentum, but Nahiri breaks apart the darkness with an explosive Gravelite barrier.
Greyas reveals his nullification ability.
When Nahiri attempts to continue the duel, Greyas demonstrates the terrifying power of his Planeswalker Spark: he can completely erase or nullify portions of objects. After part of her Gravelite swords vanishes, Nahiri recognizes the danger and agrees to end the fight. Their confrontation becomes an unconventional but successful test of each other’s strength and limits.
Greyas’s real mission is discussed.
The chapter then shifts to a conversation involving Greyas, Kaya, and Nissa. Greyas explains that he came to Ravnica not on Nicol Bolas’s direct orders, but to locate Liliana and inform her that Bolas may have secretly arranged a way for her to escape her binding contract. Nissa reveals that Liliana is currently with Bolas and will likely arrive on Ravnica with his army.
The black-market auctions are dismissed.
Greyas asks about recent illegal auctions involving dangerous contraband. Nissa considers the matter insignificant, believing the Azorius Senate is already close to arresting those involved. Greyas remains unconvinced but does not explain his suspicions.
Jace seeks information about Ugin.
After Greyas leaves, Jace appears and questions whether he can be trusted. Unable to read Greyas’s mind, Jace worries about Ugin’s disappearance and is advised to seek help from Sorin Markov on Innistrad. Jace immediately planeswalks there, hoping to locate Bolas’s ancient enemy before the war begins.
The true Nicol Bolas prepares the Spark War.
In another location, the real Nicol Bolas stands before an enormous army of enhanced Eternals. He has gathered the major components of his plan:
- The Eternal Sun to seal timelines and prevent Planeswalkers from escaping.
- The Planar Bridge to transport his army to Ravnica.
- The Planar Beacon to lure Planeswalkers into the conflict.
- The Elder Spell to steal their Sparks and restore his full power.
Bolas deploys new agents and commanders.
A mysterious plant-based Planeswalker reveals that his forces have already infiltrated Ravnica by spreading parasitic seeds capable of creating puppets. Bolas orders him to sow chaos before the invasion. Bolas also gives the Scepter of the Dead to the half-lich Xa’tos VII, assigning him and Liliana command over the Eternal Legion.
Liliana remains trapped and manipulated.
Liliana outwardly submits to Bolas, describing herself as his helpless slave. She is emotionally weakened by Zuo Si’s prolonged silence, unaware that he is deliberately allowing her to sink into fear and despair so that his eventual rescue will inspire deeper gratitude and loyalty.
Niv-Mizzet authorizes ruthless countermeasures.
At the Izzet League headquarters, Niv-Mizzet burns a suspected Dimir agent alive without evidence. His subordinate Sanjay secretly destroys the remains and erases records of the man’s presence. Niv-Mizzet orders Sanjay to monitor the Dimir, Rakdos, and Golgari guilds for Bolas’s agents and gives him permission to eliminate anyone considered a potential threat.
Character Developments and Interactions
- Nahiri is portrayed as eccentric, aggressive, and thrill-seeking, but not truly irrational. Her “greeting duel” reflects her belief that combat is the purest form of honesty. She respects Greyas enough to stop once his nullification ability demonstrates that continuing could cause serious injury.
- Greyas begins the chapter irritated and outmatched, but adapts by combining his own Spark with Shar’s divine power. He proves cautious and politically perceptive, using the threat of nullification to end Nahiri’s challenge rather than risking a deadly escalation. He also operates independently of Bolas, suggesting that he may have his own agenda.
- Shar takes pleasure in Greyas’s predicament and initially refuses to help, claiming that the opening to her power is too small. Her attitude toward him is teasing and antagonistic, though she ultimately supplies the power he needs.
- Jace remains suspicious and methodical. His inability to penetrate Greyas’s mind makes him wary, and his concern for the missing Ugin shows that he sees Ugin as essential to resisting Bolas.
- Nissa is confident that Greyas is an ally because he is Bolas’s son, though Jace’s doubts expose the danger of relying on appearances and blood ties.
- Nicol Bolas is presented as fully restored, extremely powerful, and consumed by old grudges—especially against Teferi, whom he blames for weakening Planeswalker Sparks through the mending of the time rifts. His arrogance makes him underestimate the possibility that his subordinates may betray him.
- Liliana and Xa’tos VII are both secretly untrustworthy from Bolas’s perspective. Liliana obeys because she believes she has no alternative, while Xa’tos acts as a spy who is already gathering information on Bolas’s forces.
- Sanjay demonstrates his loyalty to Zuo Si and his willingness to use deception, murder, and evidence-destruction. Niv-Mizzet recognizes his realism and lack of youthful idealism, rewarding him with greater authority.
Significant Themes
- Combat as a test of truth and trust: Nahiri believes weapons reveal a person’s authentic nature more reliably than speech, while Greyas rejects the idea that he must accept her rules.
- Manipulation and psychological control: Zuo Si’s strategy toward Liliana illustrates how fear, abandonment, and timely rescue can be used to create powerful emotional dependence.
- Loyalty versus coercion: Liliana’s obedience is not genuine loyalty but the result of enslavement and desperation. Similarly, Bolas assumes his servants are tools while failing to recognize their hidden agendas.
- Preparation before catastrophe: Nearly every faction is gathering intelligence, weapons, allies, or infiltrators in anticipation of the coming War of the Spark.
- Power and overconfidence: Bolas has restored his strength and believes victory is inevitable, but his contempt for his subordinates and confidence in his preparations may become weaknesses.
- The erosion of law during wartime: Niv-Mizzet and Sanjay abandon due process in favor of preemptive executions and secret cover-ups, showing how fear of Bolas threatens Ravnica’s ideals of order and justice.
