The next day, the Council's investigation team finally received the news and arrived in Carlos City. The newly appointed investigation team captain, Valentine Eli, and the recently promoted Laharl stared in shock at the scene before them, which looked like something straight out of hell. Some of the weaker members even vomited on the spot.
Looking at the human-shaped charred remains, Valentine covered his nose with a handkerchief and frowned as he said to Laharl beside him, "Take some people down there and investigate what happened."
Although Laharl was displeased, he couldn't refuse a captain who had been dropped on him from out of nowhere. He nodded, then picked out several team members who hadn't vomited and walked over.
Laharl crouched down and lightly touched the scorched ground with his fingertip. The magic power lingering in the soil made him frown deeply. It was a mixture of dark magic and an extremely potent toxin, but that mixture had been destroyed by an even stronger energy. Laharl still didn't know what that energy was, but he knew its owner was the culprit behind this devastation.
Laharl then led his people in a careful investigation of all Carlos City. Since a huge number of civilians had already been sacrificed, no bodies remained. However, they had received intelligence beforehand that members of the Dark Magic Group had taken control of hundreds of thousands of civilians in two small cities. It now seemed those civilians had become the source of power for summoning the demons. As for the bodies of the Dark Magic Group members, they had probably been destroyed along with the demons.
"Captain, the test results are out." A team member handed him the Magic Power Analyzer. "The peak residual energy here far exceeds the limits of even a Ten Saints-level mage."
