Not long afterward, the repelled Barbarian forces regrouped and resumed their assault.
Heshima had long expected the defenders to use such weapons. After all, according to reports from the routed soldiers, the enemy had used them even before their reinforcements arrived.
The only difference was in how they were employed. Those routed soldiers had also said that the weapons used by the Blue Lake Bay Fortress garrison differed somewhat from those used by the enemy reinforcements, most notably in range.
The weapons used by the defenders of this fortress were similar to those of the Blue Lake Bay Fortress garrison. The Barbarians could clearly see that their range was not great, roughly comparable to that of Catapults.
Their range and power fell short of the weapons fired from iron barrels that the Barbarian rout survivors had described. Those iron-barreled weapons could reach a kilometer, while these could only reach a little over two hundred meters at most, and their rate of fire was slow.
With proper countermeasures, such range and firing speed could reduce the chances of being hit. Heshima divided the Barbarian siege forces into multiple waves, creating an unbroken chain of attacks. Once one wave was struck by the enemy weapons, the forces behind it immediately rushed forward, leaving the enemy weapons no time to attack the following Barbarian troops.
Thus, the Barbarians launched another assault, now able to adapt to the Flowering Shells fired by Catapults.
However, the Barbarians also adjusted their deployment. During the first Flowering Shell attack, the warhorses of the Barbarian Cavalry roaming the perimeter to maintain the blockade had been badly spooked, causing enormous chaos.
To prevent that from happening again, the Barbarians simply withdrew all the cavalry encircling the city to a much greater distance.
James could see that the Barbarians had
