By the following afternoon, several hundred soldiers had already gathered in the open space outside the infirmary. They were all officers and men from Marvin's regiment who had signed up for this operation.

Among them were Bram and the unit under his command. The selection within their detachment had gone far more smoothly than Bram and Lafor had expected.

To their surprise, of the officers and men remaining in their detachment—including the soldiers later transferred in from the militia—only a little over seventy were still in relatively good health.

Yet no one who had signed up withdrew voluntarily. Everyone participated eagerly, including several wounded soldiers who had concealed their injuries. No one wanted to miss this opportunity.

After all, they could win honor for themselves and their detachment, or at the very least have something to talk about after retiring from the military. Of course, most of them wanted revenge for their comrades. Although the Barbarian army that had besieged their fortress had already been thoroughly defeated, everyone believed that revenge would only be complete once the entire Barbarian army had been wiped out.

Since everyone was so enthusiastic, Bram had to conduct several rounds of selection among the applicants. He even held a small competition within the detachment before finally choosing the personnel they needed.

Fortunately, Bram had required all participating officers and men to be healthy and largely uninjured. If he had allowed even lightly wounded soldiers to participate, the number of applicants might have doubled.

Thankfully, they completed the selection before noon that day. Once the candidates had been chosen, Bram did not waste any time and hurriedly brought them all to the infirmary. They had to complete registration before the deadline.

By the time Bram returned to the infirmary, Ram had already prepared the medical certificates
