By the nature of Snake People, if they did not eat adequately—or even overeat—before adulthood, they would become quite ugly once they grew up. They would also become short and emaciated, and their status in Snake Person society would fall accordingly.
As a slave, he naturally would never have had access to nutritious food. Iver could therefore imagine his general appearance.
