"What happened at the port?"
Iver asked in confusion, "Has the batch of goods smuggled by the former Minister of Trade arrived?"
He remembered that Sherlock had specifically mentioned this matter that very morning.
The cargo ship had originally been scheduled to return to port today. Iver, however, was clearly much steadier than Sherlock. He was not so easily deceived—and he did not even have a corpse.
So Iver had needed Edward to help fool everyone. Iver himself had not needed to do anything. Once Edward panicked, everyone else would realize, Oh, looks like he really has gone missing, rather than merely gone into hiding.
