Background and History

Jiraiya travels the Ninja World gathering material for his novels and searching for the Child of Prophecy. During those years, he does not teach or protect Naruto, the son of his deceased student Minato—a neglect he later regrets 1 238.

Naruto encounters him outside a women’s hot spring and interrupts his peeping. Jiraiya recognizes the boy’s resemblance to Minato, and the two later share a meal at Ichiraku Ramen. He initially refuses Naruto’s request to become his disciple, but Naruto’s account of a supposed prophetic dream persuades him to test the boy’s potential 237 238 239.

Jiraiya begins with the Rasengan, a technique Minato developed. Naruto performs it almost immediately, earning Jiraiya’s acceptance as his teacher. Their training expands to controlling Nine-Tails Chakra and signing Mount Myōboku’s toad-summoning contract 239 240 244 245. Jiraiya later brings Naruto and Satsuki to Mount Myōboku for Sage Jutsu training 378.

After the attack on Konoha, Jiraiya becomes the Fifth Hokage. He publicly announces Naruto’s parentage and names him his direct disciple. Though respected by the village, Jiraiya finds the office’s paperwork and restrictions exhausting; he seeks Tsunade’s help and eventually designates Naruto as his successor. Naruto does not accept the appointment at once 370 374 439.

Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall, burly older man with long white hair reaching his waist. His theatrical poses are part of his self-introduction as the Sage Toad Hermit; as Hokage, he wears the office’s hat and white God Robe 237 370.

Personality

Jiraiya is flamboyant, fond of freedom, and prone to peeping and flirting even when it embarrasses him or interferes with his duties 237 242 328. He resents being tied to the Hokage’s office, but takes threats to Konoha seriously: during the invasion, he restrains attacking ninja and joins the pursuit of Orochimaru 286 439.

As Naruto’s teacher, he is attentive to both the boy’s power and his character. He devises control training when Naruto’s Nine-Tails Chakra proves dangerous, worries about the villagers’ treatment of him, and trusts his judgment even when Naruto’s decisions involve resurrection 244 249 438.

Toad Summoning

• Summons Mount Myōboku toads, including GamaTada, whom he uses during his introduction to Naruto 237.
• Summons Gamakichi during Konoha’s invasion; he also uses the Frog Binding Technique to restrain Sound and Sand ninja 286.
