Ch. 581A clue found, ready to head upstairs
Key plot points and events
- Wang An and his teammates, Long Tao and Lu Ren, search Dong Wei’s apartment after his death. Long Tao reports that Dong’s parents died in a bus crash five years earlier, and that Dong’s other apartment was rented the day before the supernatural incident. The tenant’s identity is unknown.
- In the kitchen, they find a mannequin leg coated in corpse oil. Recognizing it from a previous case, Wang An orders a wider investigation into Dong and his wife’s connections and movements.
- Lu Ren’s phone sensor briefly displays a pixelated image before failing, apparently indicating interference near the elevators. Wang An keeps the team calm and has them check the remaining equipment.
- The apartment yields little else, but Wang An finds a rope on the balcony. A video recovered from the deceased Lin Mei’s phone shows that she used the rope to lower her phone downstairs.
- The footage captures a faceless, bleeding woman appearing near the window of Room Three on the twenty-fourth floor. Lin Mei retreats in terror, followed by another scream.
- Wang An connects the footage to a mysterious caller who claimed to live in that same upstairs apartment. Suspecting the caller may be an Awakened person trying to attract the team’s attention, he leads Long Tao and Lu Ren upstairs, warning them to prepare for combat.
Character developments and interactions
- Wang An demonstrates experience and composure: he recognizes the corpse oil, issues clear instructions, and steadies his teammates when the sensor fails. Once the video links the ghostly face to the mysterious caller, he quickly decides to investigate.
- Long Tao proves capable in the field despite having awakened only recently. His prior investigative experience helps him gather and relay information, handle the evidence, and report the recovered video.
- Lu Ren remains inexperienced at investigation, but notices and reports the sensor malfunction.
- Wang An’s calm leadership reassures both teammates, and they follow his decision to proceed upstairs despite the apparent danger.
Significant themes
- Duty in the face of danger: The team accepts supernatural threats as part of their work and refuses to retreat.
- Evidence and uncertainty: The corpse-oil clue, the video, and the strange call suggest connections, but the team cannot yet tell whether the upstairs resident is a victim, a suspect, or an ally.
- Teamwork under pressure: Each investigator contributes what they can, while Wang An’s steady direction keeps the group focused.
