The corridor was dead silent, nothing left but drifting dust and Hermione's violent heartbeat and gasping breaths.
Did it work? Hermione stared at the troll collapsed like a small mountain before her, her mind blank, her legs going weak as she nearly buckled.
Lynn caught her, his arm braced firmly under her weight. He was breathing hard—that last strike, channeling all his magic, had cost him dearly, and the Star Stone throbbed with lingering heat. He kept his wand tight, eyes fixed warily on the troll on the floor.
"Hermione! Lynn!" The bathroom door creaked open a crack, and two pale, tear-streaked faces—Parvati and Lavender—peeked out. They froze speechless at the sight before them.
Just then, a rush of hurried, clattering footsteps approached.
"Over here! Quick!" Professor McGonagall's sharp voice rang out, wand in hand, followed by Professor Snape and Professor Quirrell—still turbaned, deathly pale, but apparently "awake."
When Professor McGonagall saw the fallen troll in the corridor, the shattered door, the scattered remains of the torch bracket, and Hermione—pale, hair disheveled, shielded behind Lynn—her usually stern face filled with shock and lingering dread.
"Merlin's beard!" Professor McGonagall strode forward, her sharp gaze sweeping the scene before landing on Lynn and Hermione. "You two... what are you doing here?! Are you hurt?" Her voice carried rare severity and concern.
"Miss Granger was worried about her friends..." Lynn explained briefly, his voice hoarse from the fight, glancing at Parvati and Lavender.
"We... we heard screaming... came to check..." Hermione's voice still trembled, and she instinctively tightened her grip on the hand Lynn had on her arm.
Professor McGonagall's stern gaze swept over the shaken Parvati and Lavender, then to the troll frozen by the Petrifying Spell, and the broken copper pipe that had struck its wrist with perfect aim. Finally, her eyes settled on Lynn—wand still clenched, breathing unsteady but back straight, shielding Hermione—and her expression churned with complex emotions: shock, disbelief, lingering fear, and a trace of reluctant... admiration.
"You two..." Professor McGonagall took a deep breath, steadying herself. "...are utterly reckless! Impossibly rash!" Her voice was still stern, but beneath it lay undeniable concern. "Go to the Hospital Wing immediately! Madam Pomfrey will check you for injuries! Now!" Her gaze fixed on Hermione's dusty sleeve, torn at the elbow with blood seeping through, and her tone brooked no argument.
"But Professor..." Hermione tried to protest.
"No buts!" Professor McGonagall cut her off, turning to Snape and Quirrell. "Severus, Filius—Professor Flitwick had arrived as well—please handle this. Professor Quirrell..." She glanced at the still-trembling Quirrell. "You need checking too."
The Hospital Wing was filled with the soothing scent of herbal remedies. Madam Pomfrey, a kindly-faced but brisk woman, dabbed a cool, minty green ointment onto the shallow but stinging scrape on Hermione's elbow while clucking her tongue. "Thank Merlin it's just a scratch! Two first-years taking on a troll? Gryffindor courage is sometimes... a headache!" But her bandaging was gentle.
Lynn sat on the adjacent bed. Madam Pomfrey insisted on examining him too, confirming only that his magic was depleted and he was weak—no external injuries, but he needed rest.
"You're staying here tonight for observation!" Madam Pomfrey declared, finishing Hermione's bandage and handing Lynn a steaming cup of foul-smelling restorative potion. "Drink this and rest well! No wandering off!" She gave them both a stern glare, then drew the curtain between the beds and went to check on other frightened students.
The small cubicle was left to Lynn and Hermione alone. Soft moonlight streamed through the high window, and the air smelled of cool ointment and the strange potion. With their nerves unwound, a wave of exhaustion and post-crisis dread crashed over them.
Hermione looked down at her bandaged elbow, then up at Lynn on the other bed. Moonlight traced the calm lines of his profile as he slowly drank the foul potion, brow slightly furrowed. The harrowing moments in the corridor replayed in her mind—his unhesitating block, his resolve against the tide, his fingers locked with hers in protection, his precise, lethal strike, his tall back shielding her... and the solid strength of his arm when he caught her.
An overwhelming emotion—a mix of lingering fear, gratitude, dependence, and an indescribable flutter—flooded her like a tidal wave. Tears came without warning, spilling down her cheeks in heavy drops.
"Lynn..." Her voice was thick with sobs, her body trembling as she cried.
Lynn set down his cup and looked at her. In the moonlight, her small face was pale, streaked with tears, brown curls plastered messily to her cheeks. Those big eyes, usually so full of wit and curiosity, were now brimming with tears, fragile and helpless like a wounded animal.
He stood and walked to her bedside. He said nothing comforting, only reached out, his fingers brushing away the hot tears on her cheek with impossibly gentle strokes. His fingertips carried the cool residue of potion and the lingering warmth of the Star Stone.
The touch made her cry falter for a moment, then the tears flowed harder. She was no longer the proud little Witch, just a frightened eleven-year-old girl. Instinctively, she reached up with her uninjured left hand, caught his hand wiping her tears, and held it tight, as if it were her only anchor. His hand was warm and strong, still dusted with the grime of battle and a faint trace of spell residue.
"I'm sorry..." Hermione choked out, vision blurred. "I... I was too impulsive... I almost got you killed..." If she hadn't insisted on finding Parvati and Lavender, Lynn would never have faced such terrible danger.
"You saved your friends." Lynn's voice was low and steady, carrying a strange, soothing power, as he let her cling to his hand. "And you did well." He meant the courage she'd shown in casting the Stunning Spell at the last moment, even if it barely worked.
"But you..." She looked up at him through tear-filled eyes. "You used such a strong Petrifying Spell... your magic..." She remembered how he'd gasped for breath.
"I'll be fine after some rest." He said it lightly, his thumb unconsciously, very gently, stroking the back of her hand where she gripped him—the fine skin, the knuckles pressing out from her tight hold.
That tiny motion hit Hermione like a faint electric shock. All her grievance, fear, and lingering dread seemed to find an outlet in his silent touch and steady gaze. She stopped holding back, and gently, tentatively, pressed her forehead against his arm, like a fledgling seeking shelter, drawing in his reassuring scent—a mix of herbs and faint starlight—as she sobbed quietly.
Lynn's body stiffened almost imperceptibly. The warmth of her forehead against his arm, her tears soaking his sleeve, her soft sobs like a kitten's whimper—it tugged at something in his chest. A strange, tender emotion spread through the cold depths of his starlight. He didn't pull his hand away or push her off. He just stood still, letting her lean on him, and with his other hand, slowly, gently, brushed through her tangled, soft brown hair. The motion was awkward, but carried a clumsy gentleness.
Moonlight flowed like water, quietly filling the still Hospital Wing cubicle. The medicinal scent in the air seemed to take on a faint sweetness. The fierce battle, the rampaging troll, the cold fear—all seemed sealed away by this silent leaning and clumsy comfort. The Star Stone and the Moon White Stone glowed softly in the quiet, pulsing in sync, like two stars that had finally found each other in the night, leaning close. Hermione's sobs gradually faded, but she didn't let go of Lynn's hand, as if it were the only rope tethering her to safety. Madam Pomfrey's deliberately light footsteps sounded in the distance, then faded, as if making room for this quiet moment after the ordeal.
