In Immortal City, generally speaking, once someone reached the middle stage of Qi Refining—around the fifth or sixth level of cultivation—they could begin learning Dao techniques used for attack.
The Dao techniques cultivators used for combat were divided into two categories: one was martial Dao techniques learned by body cultivators, and the other was spell Dao techniques learned by spirit cultivators.
Body cultivators focused on tempering the body, using a powerful fleshly form to conduct spiritual power and attack at close range; spirit cultivators specialized in spells, using divine sense to control spiritual power and condense it into techniques, casting from afar.
There were also cultivators who cultivated both spirit and body, but such cultivators needed two heaven-blessed conditions:
First, their talent had to be good, including a high-grade spiritual root and excellent aptitude for body tempering; second, their family background had to be good, with a profound cultivation inheritance that could reconcile the conflicts between the Dao techniques of body cultivation and spirit cultivation. At the same time, it would be best if the family also had several spirit mines, so they could spend Spirit Stones without ever running out...
Cultivating both spirit and body had nothing to do with the overwhelming majority of cultivators in the cultivation world. Some great clans might not even produce a single promising seedling who could cultivate both spirit and body for several generations, much less in a remote place like Immortal City.
Whether they were Rogue Cultivators or cultivators from small families, they could only choose one path to cultivate. Either they focused on body tempering and became body cultivators, or they focused on spells and became spirit cultivators.
