Freya awoke groggily from the cold, but what met her eyes was no longer a glacier canyon formed from layers of Ice Blades, nor did the shudder-inducing howls of the canyon's Ice Wind linger by her ears. She remembered being on the windward side of the glacier when she passed out, but now she was in a windless mountain hollow. She did not know how long she had been unconscious. The cold seemed to have seeped into every inch of her body. Gritting her teeth, she finally managed to crawl up from the snow. Then Freya suddenly noticed something she had never seen before.
Not far away in her unsteady field of vision stood a tiny creature. It looked somewhat like a miniature snowman, but its slender arms were not the usual withered branches. They were made of Ice crystals. The little creature had its hands folded at its waist and was stooping as it peeked at Freya from a distance, rather like the steward in the lord's castle. It was merely short, however, and its face was covered in icicle-like whiskers and eyebrows. Beneath those brows, a pair of sparkling eyes glittered brightly.
Freya jumped in fright. She had never seen anything like it before, and she instantly sobered up, sitting bolt upright from the snow as though propelled by a spring. But she had not expected her sudden movement to frighten the other party so badly. The little creature stumbled backward two steps, tripped over a tree root, and fell squarely on its backside in the snow. It took quite a while to get back up. Then the two of them stared at each other wide-eyed.
An awkward silence spread across the snowfield.
After a long while, Freya finally realized that the other party did not seem hostile.
