Beneath Star Plucking Tower, the maidservants attending Consort Huang watched with their own eyes as two figures fell from the lofty tower one after another—one body shattered, the other bones broken and crumpled. The horrific sight was too terrible to behold.
A sudden upheaval had erupted in the deep palace. The king had lost all virtue, and the consort had died a gruesome death. The maids were already scared out of their wits; how could they dare remain where they were? They scattered and fled in all directions.
One of the maidservants mustered all her strength and staggered toward the palace where Huang Feihu was staying, desperate to deliver the dreadful news to him at once.
The night was deep. The banquet at Deer Terrace had only just ended, and Huang Feihu was sleeping heavily, his drunkenness not yet faded and his mind still muddled. He had no idea that in the brief span of a moment, the two people dearest and closest to him in this life had both perished, forever separated from him by death.
"My lord! Something terrible has happened! A disaster has struck! Wuuuu—"
The maid rushed into the hall, tears streaming down her face, her entire body trembling. Her piercing wail finally shattered the room's stillness and jolted the sleeping Huang Feihu awake.
Huang Feihu opened his eyes at the sound, still bleary with drink. When his gaze fell upon the visitor and he recognized her as a personal maid by his sister Consort Huang's side, his heart instantly sank. Most of his lingering drunkenness vanished at once, and his expression turned grave.
He abruptly sat up, his voice urgent and stern. "Why are you here instead of attending Her Highness? Did something happen to my sister? Why are you crying? Speak at once!"
