The armored vehicle came howling in from the distance. Once it stopped, a fully armed young man in a bulletproof vest jumped down from it.
The young man had cold, sharp brows and handsome features, with a tall, straight build. After he got out, a somewhat balding middle-aged man in the vehicle said in a deep voice, "Xiao Chen, I'll leave this place to you. Contact us through the communicator if anything comes up. If you find any important documents or materials, remember to bring them back intact. They can be exchanged for merit."
The Handsome Youth replied calmly, "Got it."
The balding man nodded slightly and lightly patted the driver on the shoulder. The jeep then roared away toward the next district.
Chen Wang took a deep breath, put on his Goggles, and looked over the area before him. Decaying steel high-rises stood everywhere, along with rusted metal vehicles. It was not backward, yet it seemed exceptionally desolate and savage.
Chen Wang walked farther in. A skeleton lay on the ground, apparently human. When he approached, he found that its clothing had already been reduced to tatters, while the stock of its carbine had rotted away as well. Chen Wang crouched down to inspect it. Suddenly, a thick scorpion crawled out from within the skeleton and vanished without a trace in the blink of an eye.
"Perhaps just a freelancer who wandered in here."
Chen Wang thought.
He had accepted Qiongqi Mining's mission to sweep the ruins, and his target was the Tier 2 Gene Soldier: Evil Spirit.
After arriving here, Chen Wang's gaze became exceptionally sharp. He pushed his mental power to its utmost limit. In his hand was a brand-new shotgun produced by Qiongqi Mining. It was immensely powerful and looked almost exactly like a Remington 870, except its barrel was slightly shorter and its ammunition capacity had been increased to twelve rounds. Its design was extraordinarily fierce, and its power far surpassed the grenade launcher he had previously carried. Naturally, its price was also exceedingly high.
One hundred and thirty-eight thousand.
Before coming here, Chen Wang had specifically bought this high-powered firearm from Gao Yanan. It was easy to pick up and simple to operate, but its recoil was too strong and imposed certain requirements on the user's physical fitness.
Whether it was a coincidence or not, its name was exactly the same as the one he had known in his previous life: Remington 870.
"I still haven't seen the real Zombies of this place."
Chen Wang muttered to himself.
He remained on high alert, holding his gun as he moved deeper inside.
According to Gao Yanan's description, Tier 1 Zombies had combat power roughly comparable to wild wolves or feral dogs. However, they were immune to ordinary bullets, moved quickly, and possessed formidable biting and pouncing abilities.
The mere fact that they were immune to ordinary bullets was enough to drive many people in the Great Winter World to despair. It was also one reason why firearms development there had advanced so rapidly. Unmodified firearms were sometimes almost useless against these Zombies.
Tier 2 Zombies were even stronger. Their bodies had to be completely blasted apart to weaken their ability to move. Otherwise, even if their heads were blown to pieces, they could still pounce in for the kill!
Just from that description, Chen Wang knew that the Zombies of the Great Winter Wasteland World were utterly different from the slow, lumbering Zombies he had seen on television in his previous life.
Those kinds of Zombies did not even require modified firearms. Ordinary guns could mow down swathes of them, and well-trained soldiers could crush them with ease.
But the Zombies in this world were clearly far more terrifying, possessing tremendous mobility and defensive power.
Chen Wang entered a steel high-rise. His goal was to sweep this ruin, kill twenty Zombies, and clear the ruins completely. That would count as completing the mission.
Finding documents was an additional gain and could be exchanged for merit.
Within Qiongqi Mining, this stuff was sometimes even more important than money, because it could be used to obtain officially controlled resources.
Chen Wang entered the high-rise. It had long been abandoned and was terribly dilapidated. Cold wind blew in through holes in the walls, while the metal-framed windows, stripped bare of all their glass, creaked and groaned, setting his teeth on edge.
Chen Wang searched one room after another. He did not focus his attention on important documents. After all, this was his first time dealing with such Zombies, so he had to be careful and could not afford to be distracted.
There was no point risking his life to earn money if he would not live to spend it. He had mainly come here because the strongest Zombies in this place only reached Tier 2, while he himself was already a Tier 3 Gene Soldier, giving him an overwhelming advantage.
That did not even include the spells he had learned in the Cultivation World.
Suddenly!
A flurry of hurried footsteps sounded.
A mangled, blood-smeared head suddenly poked around the doorway. It appeared to belong to a middle-aged man. Half of his face had rotted and stiffened, his flesh was a bloody mess, and his clothing was torn to shreds. It looked like he had once been wearing a suit. The Zombies here could smell the aura of the living, so even if Chen Wang went nowhere and simply stayed in this area, he would attract Zombies.
But that would be far too passive, and there was no way to know how many Zombies might come at once. Moving through the building like this was safer instead.
The Zombie moved incredibly fast, charging in front of Chen Wang in the blink of an eye.
Chen Wang did not hesitate. He yanked the trigger.
Boom! Bullets erupted from the cold muzzle as sparks of fire scattered in all directions. The Zombie was instantly blasted apart, spraying backward and scattering across the floor. As far as the eye could see, there was not a single intact fragment larger than a palm. It had been pulverized! Chen Wang froze for a moment, then lowered his head to look at the Remington 870 in his hands. Aside from looking somewhat similar, its power surpassed the firearms of his previous life by an unknown number of times. "Spending money really was the right choice."
Chen Wang sighed.
Before coming here, he had spent over two hundred thousand with Gao Yanan in one go, leaving the smile at the corners of that cool young woman's lips impossible to suppress.
Chen Wang truly was one of her major clients, generous with his spending.
In the Great Winter World, where supplies were scarce and currency held immense value, Gao Yanan personally liked VIP customers like Chen Wang, who continuously brought her orders.
After blasting apart that Tier 1 Zombie with one shot, Chen Wang's expression did not change much. His gaze immediately settled into calmness. I wonder whether a Tier 2 Zombie can withstand this gun.
Chen Wang thought.
He clearly possessed such a powerful firearm, yet he would never engage these Zombies in close combat.
For one thing, the spiritual power within his body was limited. More importantly, the spells of the Cultivation World were meant to be used as trump cards, and he would not use them lightly.
As he rounded another corner, two Zombies ran out of a room.
One was a middle-aged woman with an obese figure. Her stomach had been ripped open, leaving a bloody mess, and a long section of intestines dangled outside, making for an exceptionally horrifying sight. Her face was pale, and her eyes were grayish white.
The other was a tall, thin man with an apron tied around his waist. The apron's original color could no longer be seen, as it was covered in bloodstains. They appeared to be a married couple, though that could not be determined with certainty.
Chen Wang did not care about their identities. He pulled the trigger. Boom! Sparks flew everywhere.
The middle-aged woman with the gaping hole in her belly was blasted apart by a single shot. The tremendous impact directly sent the tall, thin man beside her flying. Not only that, half of his shoulder was struck by the blast and instantly pulverized. The bullet had passed through the middle-aged woman's body before hitting the tall, thin Zombie.
Chen Wang nodded. "Wrong positioning. Otherwise, that could have been a double kill."
He did not step forward. Instead, he pulled the trigger again.
Boom!
The floor exploded apart. The tall, thin Zombie was blasted into four pieces, turning into a heap of mangled flesh.
