"Messenger, when the Sun King still ruled the land, the progenitor of the gods once promised his youngest daughter, the most beautiful pearl in the world, Goddess Filianore, to Oolacile Township. She has always been revered and worshiped by us in the most magnificent palace, cared for at all times without the slightest neglect or blasphemy. She is the most precious treasure of Oolacile Township, so we have decided to offer her up. Surely the Human King will also be delighted by this precious tribute?"
The messenger fell into a panic.
This was a crafty tactic. Everyone knew that although the Sun King Gwyne and many of the ancient gods had passed away as the First Flame dimmed, active deities still remained on this land—the Dark Sun Gwyndolin, who dwelled in the ancient divine capital Anor Londo, and the Sun's Firstborn, who wandered the wilderness alone, commanding thunder and sunlight. Many gods had left their traces across the land. They acknowledged the King of the Kindled Flame and the human kingdoms foretold by the First Lord of Cinder. But that did not mean they could tolerate their youngest sister becoming a mortal's slave.
The Dwarf Kings had every right to do this, because the former Sun King had indeed promised his youngest daughter to them. Though she was a member of the gods and an honored guest, she was also, in truth, Oolacile Township's wealth.
If the Human King agreed, it would become a tremendous insult to the ancient gods. The White Church, which had always worshiped the deities and wielded great influence, would surely be the first to object. The gods' wrath would descend as well, and at that point, many of the forces that had helped establish the human dynasty would likely stand by and do nothing.
But
