Background / History

Lu San was raised by HanHan, the Village Guardian, whose sanity fluctuated between lucidity and madness. HanHan never disclosed his origins or the source of his martial arts and sorcery, passing them only to Lu San. Under him, Lu San awakened his Mystical Power, learned the language of birds and beasts, and inherited an unconventional disposition. 110

He was the last known survivor of Wu Family Gully after its inhabitants were driven away over the concealed gold discovery. Li Yan tracked him to Black Wind Gully, where Lu San cultivated among desolate graves and foxes. 106 107 Initially distrustful of Li Yan, he fled rather than engage him, but later revealed that Wu Lao Si's wife and daughters had been killed by a ghost and buried in East Mountain Cave. 108

Lu San recovered the Wu Family Gully ancestral remains during the Cold Clothes Festival and arranged to bury them in a cliff tomb. His actions were motivated less by attachment to the villagers than by the destruction of his home: Wu Family Gully was the place where he felt secure, and preserving its dead gave purpose to his loss. 109 110

After Li Yan's group departed Fengyang County, Lu San returned to Wu Family Gully, left his name behind, and assumed responsibility for the murder and arson there, protecting the others from blame. He subsequently evaded both Imperial Court and Jianghu pursuers. 117 650

Personality

Lu San is exceptionally wary, quiet, and prepared to retreat when circumstances turn unfavorable. During his first encounter with Li Yan, he had already planned an escape by kite; his caution later enabled him to remain untraceable despite widespread pursuit. 108 650

His loyalty is rooted in place and personal obligation. He chose to remain in Fengyang County despite Li Yan's offer to leave, and he later continued to accept dangerous responsibilities alongside Li Yan's group. 113 291 Though generally reserved, he protects his companions and spirit beasts attentively, notably supporting Wu Ba and caring for the little white fox. 201 332 739
