Inside the dessert shop.
Bun Head and Lin Shuguang sat facing each other. Just five minutes earlier, Zhong Xueyi had been sitting in Bun Head's seat.
After a moment of silence, they suddenly both spoke.
"Are you on a date with Xueyi?"
"Are you Zhong Xueyi's older sister?"
Lin Shuguang was completely confused.
He knew Zhong Xueyi's family, but he hadn't seen much of them in his previous life, and he had never heard anything about a childhood betrothal. Perhaps his family had been too embarrassed to bring it up back then, so he really didn't know whether Zhong Xueyi had an older sister.
Now, Bun Head gave him a meaningful look.
Still, she readily held out her hand. "Let's introduce ourselves properly. I'm Xueyi's older cousin, Pei Xi."
"Pei Qi?" Lin Shuguang wore an odd expression.
Bun Head froze, not understanding what was wrong with her name.
Lin Shuguang chuckled and shook her hand. "Lin Shuguang."
"So, are you on a date with Xueyi?" Pei Xi seemed to have an intense thirst for gossip.
Lin Shuguang's expression remained calm. "No."
Pei Xi drew out a long "Oh," clearly not quite believing him.
She had never seen Zhong Xueyi appear anywhere with a boy before, let alone sit face-to-face with one.
Lin Shuguang glanced at her, thinking about what had happened in the Blood Desolate Land yesterday, then picked up his milk tea and took a sip.
Pei Xi suddenly leaned closer. "Even if you are dating, I won't tell anyone."
"..." The corner of Lin Shuguang's mouth twitched. He looked at her expressionlessly and crunched the ice in his mouth on the spot.
Pei Xi suddenly spoke again. "Did that guy end up chasing you down yesterday?"
Lin Shuguang gave her a strange look, not knowing what she was getting at.
Pei Xi smiled. "I heard the commotion back then, so I'm really curious. How exactly did you survive against a Martial Artist at Six Resonances of Bone Tempering?"
As she spoke, she studied Lin Shuguang with an extremely meaningful gaze.
In the end, she couldn't read anything from Lin Shuguang's face.
He said nothing.
But after thinking it over, he still thanked her. "Thanks for yesterday."
Pei Xi waved dismissively. "No need to thank me. If you hadn't been up front setting off the traps yesterday, I wouldn't have escaped either. Saving you was the same as saving myself."
Lin Shuguang gave her another look.
"You seem to know quite a lot?"
At his words, Pei Xi immediately perked up. "Want to know?"
Lin Shuguang gave her a look that said she might as well tell him.
Pei Xi held up a finger. "For Xueyi's sake, a hundred thousand yuan per question."
Lin Shuguang's face darkened, and he stood up to leave.
Pei Xi hurriedly added, "Then fifty thousand per question! Come on, seriously? You're so rich, and you still care about fifty or a hundred thousand?"
A second later, Lin Shuguang stopped, turned around, and walked back.
Pei Xi brightened, thinking things had taken a turn.
But then!
Lin Shuguang merely picked up the milk tea on the table and left without the slightest hesitation.
Pei Xi said, "...Cheapskate!"
She sat fuming in her chair and took two hard pulls of her milk tea.
Just as she was about to leave, a server suddenly stopped her.
"Excuse me, miss. Could you settle the bill, please?"
Pei Xi froze. "But I already paid for my drink."
The server smiled. "The gentleman who was just here hasn't paid for his yet."
Pei Xi's eyes widened at once, and she immediately turned to look at the figure walking briskly away outside the window.
She forced a few words through gritted teeth. "I! Don't! Know! Him!"
The server gave her a smile.
You were chatting away for so long, and now you're telling me you don't know him?
In the end, Pei Xi gave in under the server's smile and raised her hands in surrender. After paying Lin Shuguang's bill, she stormed out after him.
Her search came to nothing.
She clenched her fists in anger.
"Bastard, you'd better not let me run into you again!"
An hour later.
Lin Haiyang took Lin Shuguang onto the bus heading home.
"How was it?"
Lin Shuguang looked puzzled. "How was what?"
Lin Haiyang immediately gave him a look that said he was a blockhead. "How was the girl?"
"Pretty smart, but not my type," Lin Shuguang said casually.
Hearing the first half, Lin Haiyang thought there was hope, only to be bewildered by the second half. "Not your type?"
Lin Shuguang tilted his head and looked out the window. "Too delicate. Not interested."
Lin Haiyang immediately said in exasperation, "You call that delicate? She's not just top of her class in academics. Her martial exam results are among the best in her school too. There's really no chance? Think it over again."
"She couldn't even take one punch from me."
"What did you say?" Lin Haiyang hadn't heard clearly and turned toward him in confusion.
Lin Shuguang kept it brief. "Not interested."
Hearing that, Lin Haiyang could only drop it. His voice carried some worry. "All you ever do is practice martial arts. I'm really afraid you won't find a wife."
"..." Lin Shuguang's face clouded over. "Definitely my own dad. You really don't mince words."
Lin Haiyang didn't hear that either. Rubbing his chin, he muttered to himself, "I remember Uncle Qi's daughter... I think she's three years older than you. I heard she's already gotten into the Martial Arts School. She'd definitely meet your standards... A wife three years older brings a fortune in gold. Shuguang, how about we visit Uncle Qi's house tomorrow?"
At those words, Lin Shuguang immediately turned his head and pretended to sleep. No matter what Lin Haiyang said, he played dead and refused to wake up.
As soon as they got home, Mother Lin asked curiously, "How was it?"
Lin Shuguang suddenly spoke. "Mom, Dad spent the whole ride telling me how he chased girls when he was young. Even I thought he sounded like a total scumbag. He even said a wife three years older brings a fortune in gold, and one thirty years older brings a whole kingdom... Mom, think that over carefully. I wouldn't stand for it!"
Lin Haiyang stared blankly.
After a moment of shock, Mother Lin suddenly turned around, her gaze sharp!
Lin Haiyang pulled off his shoe and burst into curses. "You little brat, stop talking nonsense! Your mother is sensible and fair. She'd never believe your lies!"
Lin Shuguang grinned, gave him a look that said he was on his own, and darted straight out the door.
Thinking about how dull the morning had been, Lin Shuguang wandered around.
Along the way, he received a call from Xu Jie. "Bro, you're incredible. Out of nine subjects, every teacher except Old Fu called you out by name!"
"What happened?" Lin Shuguang walked aimlessly along the street.
On the other end of the phone, Xu Jie's admiration poured out in an endless torrent. "You haven't written a single word of homework for any of the nine subjects, have you? And you've skipped class repeatedly, even Old Fu's! Seriously, you've done what I've always wanted to do but never dared!"
Not doing homework? Skipping class?
Lin Shuguang didn't take it to heart. Old Fu had already given him his word, after all...
Then he heard Xu Jie continue, "Except for Old Fu, all the other teachers said you have three days to hand in every assignment. Otherwise, contacting your parents is only the start. They'll even visit your house for tea. That would be one thing, but they also said you're challenging the school's rules, and they're going to make an example of you. There might be an extra speaking slot for you at next Monday's flag-raising ceremony."
"..." Lin Shuguang's face darkened.
After hanging up, he called Old Fu.
"What's going on? Old Fu, how come you couldn't keep this under control?"
Old Fu seemed to know why Lin Shuguang was calling him to account. He chuckled and explained, "Leave is leave, and I approved that. But the homework assigned by the other teachers isn't something I can interfere with. Just push through it. Isn't it only a little homework? Stay up one night, and you can finish it all!
"I'm sure your senior fellow disciple has told you too. Those who practice martial arts must forge ahead, fearing neither hardship nor suffering!"
"..." Lin Shuguang was speechless for a long while.
You really do make a damn good point, but right now, I just want to fight you!
Do homework?
No way!
After hanging up, Lin Shuguang turned and went into a nearby shop to buy a notebook and a pen.
Back home, he opened the notebook.
Then he spent a full half hour staring blankly...
In the end, he cast aside his pen for martial arts without hesitation and headed for the Blood Desolate Land, wanting to fight and kill to blow off some steam.
"Is that him?" Song Wan watched suspiciously as Lin Shuguang walked toward the outskirts alone. After a moment's thought, she quietly followed him.
All this time, she had been unable to understand why their homeroom teacher allowed Lin Shuguang to skip class.
A little later, she stared at Lin Shuguang's destination in shock and uncertainty.
"That's... that's the Blood Desolate Land? He actually dares to come here!"
