The Classic of Mountains and Seas: The Seventh Idea-The Flood Control of Gun and Yu That Dust Could Not Conceal
Yu of Great was surnamed Si. Legend had it that he was a descendant of Zhuanxu and the son of Gun.
The Records of the Grand Historian said that Gun was Zhuanxu's son, and that Gun gave birth to Yu.
But we should take the Classic of Mountains and Seas as our standard. The Classic of Mountains and Seas said: "The Yellow Emperor gave birth to Luo Ming; Luo Ming gave birth to White Horse, and White Horse was Gun."
If you take "gave birth to" to mean bearing a child, then Gun would be a generation older than Zhuanxu, which was obviously absurd.
As I said before, "gave birth to" did not necessarily mean having a child. It could also refer to a branch tribe that developed from another. The sentence itself conveyed that meaning.
One branch of the Yellow Emperor's descendants developed into the Luo Ming clan, and the Luo Ming clan in turn developed into the White Horse clan. White Horse might have been that clan's totem.
I had no idea what it specifically looked like. In any case, it was called White Horse. My guess was... it might have been a dragon-descendant totem. In ancient times, the white horse was an incarnation of the dragon. A white horse eight feet tall was believed to be descended from dragons.
In short, Gun was the leader of the White Horse clan.
Translated from the recorder's perspective, the meaning was: "The White Horse clan is the clan of the current Gun."
I followed the Classic of Mountains and Seas, so Gun was not Zhuanxu's son.
However, the Records of the Grand Historian might not have been baseless either. One theory held that one of Zhuanxu's sons was Gunzeng, who gave birth to Gunzu. Gunzu gave birth to Gunfu, Gunfu
