Ch. 21Moonlight Like Water (Part Six)
Plot points and events
- Lorist looks back on his relationship with Miss Windsor (Wenna), once passionate and hopeful. She wanted him to become a Silver Knight of her family, lead its resistance, and eventually govern its reclaimed lands.
- Lorist cannot promise this. His family’s Battle Qi method has left him unable to retain Battle Qi, and he refuses to serve another family while still bound by Norton pride and his own desire for freedom.
- Wenna accuses him of caring more about his principles than about her needs. Their relationship deteriorates, and she eventually ends it, choosing the powerful Marquis Rophie Fosta.
- Lorist encounters Wenna with Rophie and is devastated by the breakup. Rophie later visits, apologizes, and asks what compensation Lorist wants; Lorist declines and moves out.
- Lorist learns that Rophie is a Gold One-star fighter, a marquis, and commander of Chigda’s Imperial Guard. El warns him that Rophie is far beyond him in rank, power, and status.
- Three days later, Lorist joins an expedition to the Ruins Archipelago, partly hoping time away might change things. On his return, he finds only disappointment.
Character developments and interactions
- Lorist confronts the conflict between love and personal conviction. He genuinely loves Wenna, but will not abandon his family identity or accept the noble hierarchy she expects him to embrace. After the breakup, he is emotionally shattered but refuses compensation or confrontation.
- Wenna shifts from a loving partner who imagines a shared future to someone who prioritizes the Windsor Family’s standing and her own expectations of a worthy partner. She believes Lorist has not considered what she needs.
- Rophie behaves courteously toward Lorist and frames his visit as an apology and a practical request that Lorist leave Wenna’s home. His power and royal connections underline the gulf between him and Lorist.
- El acts as Lorist’s friend and confidant, investigating Rophie and bluntly warning Lorist against challenging him.
Significant themes
- Love versus principle: Lorist asks whether love requires sacrificing core beliefs, while Wenna sees his refusal as a failure to meet her needs.
- Status and power: Wenna’s expectations are shaped by noble rank, Battle Qi, and family reputation; Lorist’s capabilities matter less to her than his Black Iron status.
- Freedom versus obligation: Lorist resists becoming a Windsor knight and taking on the duties and restrictions of noble service.
- Loss and betrayal: The breakup forces Lorist to face the pain of love ending and the possibility that the two partners no longer want the same future.
