Ch. 81The noble conference
Plot points and events
- Seven representatives of the Noble Alliance Army arrive in Geldos City, wrongly assuming Lorist leads a merchant convoy. They condemn his occupation of Count Kobili’s lands and the public display of Kobili’s body, and demand that he surrender his conquests.
- When Viscount Snaff insults Lorist, Lorist declares war on Snaff’s family and orders Knight Ross to destroy his domain. The threat shocks the delegation into recognizing that Lorist is a powerful landed noble, not a merchant.
- Lorist explains that Kobili was actually the bandit Redbeard, responsible for years of crimes and the massacre of a Norton trading convoy. He presents Kobili’s own diaries as evidence.
- Lorist then reveals letters proving Snaff betrayed the Noble Alliance by leaking its plans to Kobili. Baron Dockra, whose son died because of that betrayal, attacks Snaff and bites off part of his ear.
- Lorist proposes handing much of Kobili’s conquered territory and property to the Alliance, while asking it to recognize Tim as heir to Viscount Tibli’s domain, approve Tim’s marriage to Miss Enler, and grant the couple Bordock Manor Castle. He also requests that the caravan remain in Geldos City for a month.
- The representatives accept the proposal in principle and call a noble conference. After seven days, the conference approves Lorist’s conditions. Lorist transfers substantial resources and authority to it, including half-control of Geldos City and William Mills Castle, rescued noblewomen, deeds to lordless domains, and the families of Kobili’s fallen soldiers.
- The conference remains mired in arguments, though it agrees to execute Snaff and the male members of his family. Meanwhile, the caravan profits from selling supplies to the assembled nobles and builds up its military strength.
- In February, Lorist leaves the caravan and heads north with a small party, including Josk, who insists on accompanying him.
Character developments and interactions
- Lorist shifts from courteous host to forceful negotiator, using military power, documentary evidence, and carefully chosen concessions to control the talks. Though entitled to keep his spoils, he presents himself as willing to restore order and protect surviving heirs.
- Viscount Snaff is exposed as both arrogant and treacherous. His attempt to shame Lorist instead brings his betrayal to light and ends in his arrest and execution.
- Baron Henderson moves from suspicion to respect, recognizing Lorist’s strength and negotiating pragmatically on the Alliance’s behalf.
- Baron Dockra learns that Snaff’s betrayal caused his son’s death and responds with grief and uncontrolled violence.
- Fatty Shi supports the negotiations and enjoys the commercial opportunities created by the conference’s prolonged disputes. Lorist’s growing force gains experienced leadership when Zino Fareya joins as a commander.
Significant themes
- Appearance versus reality: The Alliance mistakes a noble family’s armed caravan for a merchant convoy, underestimating Lorist and misunderstanding his rights.
- Legitimacy, justice, and power: Lorist grounds his actions in evidence of Kobili’s crimes and Snaff’s treason, while also wielding military force to secure his position.
- Betrayal and its human cost: Snaff’s secret dealings have destroyed lives and families, most painfully for Baron Dockra.
- Practical diplomacy: Lorist trades land, authority, and resources for recognition of his chosen heirs, security for survivors, and a clear path north.
- Opportunity amid disorder: The Alliance’s infighting stalls decisions but benefits the caravan’s trade and gives Lorist time to prepare for his journey.
