There were different paths to cultivation among the monks. Some chose arduous cultivation, traveling far and wide and tempering themselves continuously along the way.
At the first tier was the Enlightenment Realm. One had to see whether a person possessed insight and opportunity. If they did, it proved they could enter the Buddhist Sect and cultivate.
The second tier was the Grain Abstinence Realm. As the body absorbed Spiritual Energy and was tempered, it could go several days without eating or drinking, and eventually even without water.
This was the beginning of their arduous cultivation: constantly challenging their own limits, tempering their minds, and using physical pain to deepen the training of their minds and souls.
The third tier was the Spirit Gathering Realm, rather similar to the early stages of cultivators and sorcerers. After long-term strain and training, the body could contain more Spiritual Energy. By this point, most monks had stabilized their spiritual platforms and could draw in vast amounts of Spiritual Energy.
They then sent it into their bodies. Once it was contained and absorbed, it accelerated the tempering of their bodies. Repeating this process strengthened them.
However, upon reaching the fourth tier, the Sarira Realm, one had to condense a sarira on the spiritual platform. This was also the Spiritual Item that most monks would have extracted from their bodies after passing away, and so it was called a sarira.
It had similarities to cultivators forming their cores and sorcerers condensing their stars.
