Throughout its long history, demons could easily muster armies of hundreds of thousands of cannon fodder for almost any offensive against the devils. Compared with Baator Hell, which had only nine layers, the Abyss had hundreds of layers from which to recruit troops and could easily field dozens of times as many soldiers. If not for the demons' chaotic nature and the lack of effective leadership from an abyssal titan, the Devil Legions would never have been able to suppress the Abyss so easily. At least during the era of the Abyssal Triumvirate, both sides had traded blows for thousands of years. Only after the Abyss lost an effective ruler had the Devil Legions completely suppressed it.

The situation on the Material Plane was extremely dangerous.

Even though some places had halted the devils' advance, vast stretches of land had inevitably fallen to their attacks.

The southern offensive had already reached the Wind Spear Hills. Had Port Nyanzaru not descended from the sky onto the South Coast, the devastated southern region would likely have fallen completely. This had once been the most prosperous and populous part of the Material Plane, but now its cities had withered away. White Horse City, Falling Leaf City, Amber City, and so many other once-thriving cities had been destroyed by the Time of Troubles. Only a handful of areas protected by deities had survived in the entire southern region. Some weaker deities, such as the God of Travel, the halflings' God of Death, the gnomes' God of Spies and God of Rebellion, and the dwarves' God of Defense and god of travel, had all fallen to attacks by the Archdukes of Hell.
