As the demon army steadily advanced, the battlefront pushed all the way to the edge of the chaotic void.

This layer had the following traits:

Normal gravity: The uppermost layer of the Abyss, the Plains of Infinite Portals, and many other layers have normal gravity. However, some other layers of the Abyss may encompass a wide range of radically different gravitational traits. Normal time: Time passes in the Abyss at the same rate as on the Material Plane. However, persistent rumors speak of a layer where time flows backward with respect to aging. Strange as this reverse flow may be, a visitor might grow younger or even fade into nothingness. Infinite space: The number of layers in the Abyss is always infinite, although its known realms are finite. Divine Morphic Form: An entity must be at least as powerful as a lesser deity to alter the Abyss. Weaker creatures will find the Abyss no different from the ordinary Material Plane (alterable morphic trait), because this plane can be altered through spells and physical actions. Mixed elemental and energy traits: These traits differ radically between layers. Across the Abyss as a whole, no single element or energy consistently dominates, although particular layers may have one dominant element or energy, or a mixture of two or more traits. Mildly chaos-aligned and mildly evil-aligned: Lawful characters suffer a -2 penalty on all Charisma-based checks in the Abyss, and good characters suffer the same penalty. Lawful good characters suffer a -4 penalty on all Charisma-based checks.

The Abyss itself was endless.

However, the known layers were finite in size. Some regions within these layers were inaccessible and could only be reached through special means.
