The night passed quickly.
Earning Ildis's trust would not be easy, but Soren had at least won his acceptance. The two had formed a temporary alliance of adventurers.
To be honest!
After observing Ildis all night, Soren had found nothing remarkable about the man who would supposedly become the most powerful wizard of the future.
In terms of strength, his class level was only around eighteen. There were plenty of wizards that powerful across the Material Plane.
Ildis could not have been very old, perhaps in his twenties or thirties. Judging by his talent, he was something of a genius. But others were more gifted. The Northern Witches had Goria, and Wizard City in the south had several people with even more astonishing talent. The southern wizards had deeper foundations, after all. From a deity's perspective, someone who had not reached the Legendary Domain by his twenties or thirties was merely a gifted mortal. Every century or so, the Material Plane produced one or two monsters who reached legendary strength by the age of twenty. At most, Ildis would be a footnote in their stories.
How to put it?
After observing him again and again, Soren concluded that Ildis was competent but hardly exceptional. Nothing about his personality particularly stood out. He was cautious and knew how to protect himself, with a calculating side to him. Nor was he the sort of wizard who shut himself away to do research. In every respect, he was above average.
But even taken together, none of that seemed reason enough for the Goddess of Magic to choose him.

The man was quite handsome.

Soren was fairly handsome himself, thanks in part to his half-elf heritage, and his charisma was hardly low. But compared with Ildis, he might
