Controlling devils was easier than controlling demons.
Creatures of lawful alignment were accustomed to obeying orders. Unlike demons, with their chaotic nature, a devil under your control would not have random bouts of madness. But if you controlled a devil, there was one thing you always had to remember: devils would never be particularly loyal to you. They were constantly thinking of ways to betray you. Until they were certain of success, however, they would obediently do their work.
Devils believed in order and rules, not because these things helped society advance, but because they believed they could exploit those rules for personal gain. Every devil longed to ascend to a higher rank, where they could freely alter the rules to suit their own goals. A devil's ideal was to go from obeying rules to making them. Across the many layers of Baator Hell, numerous Archdukes of Hell imposed all manner of rules on their devil subordinates to further their own interests.
As a lofty deity, especially one with medium divinity,
Soren hardly needed to worry about a high-ranking devil's betrayal. He was confident he could keep the devil under control, because deities commanded devils differently from mortals. Deities controlled them directly through their souls, while most mortals relied on spells and true names. That left loopholes for devils to exploit, allowing them to betray their masters and plot their deaths at any moment.

Not long after Soren returned, Goria came to his study.
"I heard you brought back a high-ranking devil?"
Goria glanced around after entering, then brushed back her long hair. "Where did he go? Did you let him go?"
Soren nodded and looked at her. "What is it?"
