Geography and Settlements

  • Loren City — Home of the provincial Municipal Center, where Thor registers his pioneer territory and later receives his Baron and Viscount investitures 15 96 229.
  • Maine River Valley — Site of Thor’s Eagle Territory. Its proximity to the Northern Glacier helped spare it from the worst of one prolonged orc incursion 15 105.
  • Western Region — Contains the Danube River and a dense concentration of Pioneer Lords; more than a hundred lived near that river alone 110 116.
  • Northern border — Defended by fortified lines against orc tribes. Tribes that pass through can attack territories deeper in the province 94 101.

Pioneering and Administration

The Tulip Kingdom established the province in previously untamed northern lands. A little over twenty years later, less than one-tenth had been developed despite the presence of at least a thousand Pioneer Knights 5 15.

  • A Pioneer Knight could qualify for a Kingdom Baron title by developing a town with at least 5,000 residents. Combat merit later provided another route: Thor was invested after earning sufficient Merit Points fighting orcs 5 94 97.
  • Investiture made a pioneer territory permanent property protected by kingdom law. Before that, lords faced both frontier dangers and conflicts with other lords 33 92 97.
  • Marquis Lehman held the Northern Province as his fief and was responsible for defending its border. His restrictions on outside involvement were expected to last another ten years, but ended after the northern orcs retreated 97 226 316.
  • Early records counted 56 Barons granted titles over twenty years, of whom only about 36 appeared to have survived 5.

Resources and Trade

  • The province contains magical beasts, orcs, mineral deposits and largely unexplored ancient ruins. Thor’s Daily Intelligence repeatedly identifies valuable beasts, plants and resource sites there 11 45 101 172.
  • Population and weapons are major development needs. Lords also rely on supplies from Loren City; wartime demand drove sharp increases in armor prices 76 103 226.
  • The Habs Merchant Guild profited heavily from the slave trade under Lehman’s restrictions. After those restrictions ended, other noble merchant guilds entered the province 226 316.
  • By Thor’s return in Chapter 377, Eagle City had displaced Loren City as the province’s commercial center. Thor controlled its eastern region, while Eagle Ridge and the Eagle Merchant Guild held most of the province’s commercial influence 377.

History

The province’s early settlement remained precarious. Orcs and magical beasts threatened new territories, while rival Pioneer Lords competed for land and resources. Even Loren City had harsh living conditions for its free citizens 15 37 92.

A prolonged orc incursion devastated territories across the north and spread into the west. Kingdom reinforcements eventually held the defensive lines, and a sweep cleared most of the tribes that had entered the province; the unrest subsided after roughly five months 110 118 119.

Following the defeat of the Behemoth King, orc forces retreated and the Northern Defense Line began expanding northward. The prospect of new land drew noble descendants and Knight Orders into the Northern Province, intensifying competition for its resources 200 203 204 211.
