Background / History

Nawaki is Tsunade's younger brother, Mito Uzumaki's grandson, and Hashirama Senju's grandson. He carries both Senju and Uzumaki bloodlines, a legacy that placed immense expectations on him from childhood. Although he did not initially manifest Wood Release or exceptional medical talent, he possessed high stamina and chakra reserves and trained relentlessly toward his stated dream of becoming Hokage. 7 17 31

As an Academy senior, Nawaki was known for his hot-blooded, straightforward manner and repeatedly declared Satoru to be his rival. His early skills centered on unusually solid fundamentals, particularly Clone and Substitution Techniques, built through repeated practice rather than innate genius. 16 17 27

A point-blank spar with Satoru left him badly scorched and forced him to confront the gap between himself and more gifted peers. Rather than abandoning his ambition, he resolved to train harder and awaken Wood Release through effort. 17

Appearance

Nawaki has brown hair. 31

  • Wears a Konoha forehead protector as an active shinobi. 200
  • Later displays Sage Mode markings around his eyes while using Wood Release Sage Arts. 239

Personality

Nawaki is energetic, frank, and openly competitive. He readily praises others' talent—even after losing to them—and treats strong peers as motivation rather than enemies. 16 17

His ambition to become Hokage is tied to the pressure of Hashirama's legacy and Tsunade's accomplishments. This initially pushes him to overtrain and rush into danger, but later matures into a more deliberate conviction that Hokage must be earned through everyone's recognition. 17 263

He can be impulsive and easily distracted by gossip or spectacle, but is protective of subordinates and civilians. He prioritizes rescuing Karin Uzumaki over retaliation against Kusagakure and holds off enemy Anbu so Genma, Guy, and Ebisu can escape. 89 200 262

Abilities & Skills

Senju–Uzumaki Physiology

Nawaki's mixed heritage gives him above-average stamina and chakra reserves. Life Crystal treatment further develops these traits, improving his vitality, regeneration, and endurance. 17 73

  • Can sustain prolonged combat and serve as a frontline damage-drawer. 47 73
  • Possesses accelerated self-healing after treatment. 73
  • Has sufficient chakra to maintain high-consumption Wood Release techniques with support. 170

Chakra Perception

Nawaki awakened passive chakra perception through a ritual conducted by Satoru, Orochimaru, and Tsunade, then developed Mind's Eye of the Kagura. 87

  • Detects enemy chakra for reconnaissance and battlefield warning. 87 90
  • Guides Satoru Squad through long-term infiltration and sabotage missions behind enemy lines. 90
  • Provides vital scouting in low-visibility conditions such as the Land of Rain. 118
  • Cannot reliably detect White Zetsu's underground infiltration. 262

Earth and Water Release

Before awakening Wood Release, Nawaki favored Earth Release and Water Release, with the latter benefiting from rainy conditions. 42 73

  • Earth Release: Underground Submarine — escapes Swamp of the Underworld by moving underground. 47
  • Earth Release: Earth Flow Wall — a B-rank defensive technique also used to identify and trap concealed opponents. 47
  • Uses Earth Release to fight drawn-out engagements and alter terrain. 47

Wood Release

After a month of controlled experimentation, Nawaki receives inactivated Hashirama Cells. His inherited bloodline and Hashirama's chakra-containing necklace allow him to use Wood Release without losing control. 112

  • Tree Sea Descent — creates a forest that disorients and weakens enemies. 201
  • Wood Clone — creates a clone for infiltration, evasion, and counterattacks. 198 201
  • Great Forest Technique — launches wooden growths as an offensive counterattack. 201
  • Wood Dragon Technique — defeats the final Kusagakure Jonin during the pursuit of Karin. 201
  • Can bind and carry an ally with wooden vines while moving at speed. 200
  • His Wood Release is powerful enough to repeatedly halt the Seven Ninja Swordsmen on the eastern front. 262

Wood Release Sage Mode

Nawaki secretly learns Hashirama's Sage Technique and can invoke Sage Mode to strengthen his Wood Release. 239

  • Wood Release Sage Art: Hotei Technique — an “absolute defense” that surprises the Third Mizukage. 239
  • His version requires Sage Mode, unlike Hashirama's ability to employ similar defensive power in a normal state. 239

Sealing Techniques

Mito Uzumaki teaches Nawaki some Uzumaki sealing techniques after his recovery. 73

  • Assists in the Nine-Tails transfer ritual by maintaining a Wood Release suppression technique. 170 171
  • His Wood Release suppression is far weaker than Hashirama's and cannot fully subdue Kurama without Satoru's assistance. 171

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • First Hokage's necklace — Tsunade's birthday gift to Nawaki; contains crystallized Wood Release chakra from Hashirama and is essential to safely harmonizing his Hashirama Cell transplant. 60 112
  • Kunai and standard shinobi tools — used during solo reconnaissance and close combat. 198 200

  • Tsunade — Older sister and protector; guides his foundational training, supports his Wood Release treatment, and fiercely rejects Root's attempts to recruit him. 17 112 116
  • Mito Uzumaki — Grandmother and teacher in Uzumaki sealing techniques; regards his growth as proof that he has fulfilled Hashirama's legacy. 73 170

  • Orochimaru — Jonin instructor and later mentor in Wood Release research; entrusts Nawaki with the eastern coast's defense. 28 112 239

  • Uchiha Mikoto — Teammate under Orochimaru; serves with Nawaki in Satoru Squad and later leads missions with him while Satoru remains in the Land of Rain. 28 132
  • Minato Namikaze — Fellow member of the Leaf Sannin and political peer; joins Nawaki in missions and discussions concerning Konoha's future. 150 285 309
  • Karin Uzumaki — An Uzumaki survivor Nawaki rescues from the Land of Grass and brings toward Konoha's protection. 200 202
  • Uchiha Madara — Attempts to recruit Nawaki as a proxy due to interest in his bloodline; Nawaki refuses, prompting Madara to erase the encounter from his memory. 263 264
  • Genma Shiranui, Might Guy, and Ebisu — Members of Nawaki's Chunin squad; he holds off Kirigakure Anbu so they can escape an ambush. 262
