Background / History

Nine years after Ren Woxing's disappearance, Dongfang Bubai succeeds him as Cult Master but becomes absorbed in martial-arts cultivation. During this period, Yang Lianting rises from an insignificant cult member to Grand Steward, receiving control over much of the Sun Moon Divine Cult's power despite having neither notable martial skill, seniority, nor prior achievements. 1 13

His sudden promotion creates hostility among veteran members, particularly the hall masters and incense masters who outwardly obey him while privately despising him. To consolidate his position, Yang is said to eliminate rivals and cultivate loyal subordinates. 13

Following Cloud Water Hall's destruction at Mount Heng, Wu Lianjiang identifies Yang as the source of the betrayal that exposed the hall's operation. Zhang Yu later repeats this accusation to Tong Baixiong, initiating a direct challenge to Yang's authority. 3 14

Authority and Influence

• Yang commands the Purple Cloud Guards, a force of approximately three hundred selected martial artists drawn from multiple halls. They guard Chengde Hall and answer only to Dongfang Bubai and Yang Lianting. 13
• He oversees purges against perceived enemies within the cult, including the interrogation of Cloud Water Hall's surviving members to establish Wu Lianjiang's alleged treason. 16
• After Ren Yingying leaves the Blackwood Cliff headquarters for Luoyang, the cult's authority falls completely into Yang's hands. 28
• Under his administration, Wu Lianjiang is posthumously judged negligent and incompetent; his property is confiscated and his family is sentenced to three years of hard labor. Former officials associated with Ren Woxing are subsequently purged. 28

Personality

Yang Lianting is politically calculating and controlled under pressure. When confronted in Chengde Hall with Hou Jian, a messenger alleged to have carried correspondence between him and the Mount Song Sect, he briefly shows shock before regaining an indifferent demeanor. 20

He responds aggressively to threats, attempting to brand Zhang Yu as Zuo Lengchan's spy before Zhang can support Tong Baixiong's accusations. During the ensuing chaos, he orders Hou Jian arrested; Hou is killed before the accusation can be resolved. 19 20

His reputation within the cult is deeply divisive. Tong Baixiong considers him a flattering opportunist who has misled Dongfang Bubai, while Tong Yukang argues that Yang attracts younger followers because he promotes talent without conventional restrictions. 14 15

• Dongfang Bubai — Cult Master whose favor elevated Yang to Grand Steward and entrusted him with broad authority; Yang displays fervent devotion toward him. 1 20

Wu Lianjiang's defeat at Mount Heng is blamed on an internal leak, with Yang repeatedly named as the suspected traitor. Yang subsequently moves to interrogate surviving Cloud Water Hall disciples and define Wu as a betrayer of the cult. 3 16

Chengde Hall Confrontation

When Tong Baixiong arrives at Blackwood Cliff with Zhang Yu and purported evidence, Yang immediately attempts to discredit Zhang as Zuo Lengchan's spy. The presentation of Hou Jian fails to produce a decisive verdict after Hou claims Tong instructed him to carry the letter. Dongfang Bubai ultimately leaves the matter for Ren Yingying to handle. 19 20

Consolidation of Power

After the Chengde Hall dispute fades without Yang's removal, Ren Yingying departs for Luoyang and Yang's authority becomes dominant. He continues purging figures tied to Ren Woxing's former administration while punishing Wu Lianjiang's surviving family. 28
