June 17.
Early in the morning, Qiao Sang arrived at Mingpei Middle School accompanied by her mother.
High School Entrance Exam testing centers were assigned by district, with candidates from every school in the district randomly distributed among the various test sites.
Qiao Sang had been assigned to Class 7, Grade 1 at Mingpei Middle School.
"Did you bring your admission ticket?"
"I did."
"Did you bring your pens and everything else?"
"I did."
"During the exam, do the questions you know first. Leave the ones you don't for last, understand?"
"I understand."
"Go on in. Mom will come pick you up after you finish," her mother said gently.
This was the first time her mother had been so gentle since losing Jian Jian Bear's autograph, and Qiao Sang was a little unaccustomed to it.
"Mom..."
Her mother's voice grew even gentler. "What is it?"
"It's not time yet. I can't go in," Qiao Sang said helplessly.
If possible, she really hoped her mother would change this habit of arriving half a day early for everything.
Her mother: "..."
A classroom had more than just two teachers proctoring it. There were also two Pet Beasts.
Qiao Sang sat quietly in the sixth seat of the fifth row.
A purple-blue rodent Pet Beast used its antennae to touch each candidate in turn. Its blue antennae grew from its forehead, around seven or eight centimeters long, shaped like antennae.
As an academic underachiever who had improved slightly recently, Qiao Sang recognized the Pet Beast as a Purple Tile Rat.
Purple Tile Rat, an Electric-type Pet Beast.
It could use the antennae on its forehead to determine whether there were electronic devices nearby.
The Purple Tile Rat touched the candidates one by one. When it reached the candidate in the third seat of the third row, its antennae suddenly released a burst of purple electricity.
"Ah!"
The candidate in the third seat of the third row cried out uncontrollably. The pen in his right hand seemed to slip from his grasp and rolled onto the desk.
The current was very weak. The candidate's hand merely went numb, with no other effects.
"Tile, tile."
The Purple Tile Rat pointed at the candidate in the third seat of the third row and cried out.
"Take it out." The female teacher who had been sitting at the podium rose and walked over to the Purple Tile Rat.
The candidate's face turned pale. His lips pressed tightly together, but he did not move.
"I'll say it again. Take it out," the female teacher repeated.
Under everyone's gaze and the pressure of the teacher's stare, the candidate parted his hair and took out an electronic device the size of a button battery.
There was nothing unusual about this kind of device. It could transmit the correct multiple-choice answers over a distance through consciousness, but it could not handle fill-in-the-blank or written-response questions.
That was because only Psychic Type Pet Beasts could achieve this kind of transmission.
This meant he had an accomplice with a Psychic Type Pet Beast who could see the exam paper.
Naturally, that accomplice could not have been another candidate.
"This subject's score can only be canceled." After confiscating the device, the female teacher spoke without mercy and took the exam paper from his desk.
After the candidate broke down and left wiping away tears, the female teacher raised her voice. "If you have any electronic devices, take them out now. Don't cling to any luck. If the Purple Tile Rat finds you, your scores can only be invalidated."
No one spoke.
Fortunately, as the Purple Tile Rat continued touching each candidate, nothing else unusual happened.
As soon as the candidates began writing, the other eyeball-shaped Pet Beast split directly into five or six copies and floated in different directions around the room.
This Pet Beast was called Jian Jian Eye. The images seen by its split bodies could be directly shared with the original body.
It monitored every movement in the examination room from all directions without blind spots.
It was considered an essential Pet Beast for proctoring exams. Not only was it seen during the High School Entrance Exam, but during every National College Entrance Examination as well.
However, the Jian Jian Eyes capable of proctoring the National College Entrance Examination had stronger versions of this skill, able to split into at least ten or so copies.
Qiao Sang focused on her exam paper when a Jian Jian Eye suddenly moved close to the hand she was writing with.
Her writing hand trembled involuntarily.
The eyeball, with its spiral-patterned pupil, kept rotating and changing angles, staring at the exam paper one moment and her face the next.
After watching her for five seconds without finding anything unusual, the Jian Jian Eye left.
Qiao Sang felt that the High School Entrance Exam tested not only one's knowledge, but also one's psychological resilience.
Who wouldn't be startled if an eyeball-shaped Pet Beast suddenly popped up and stared at them while they were seriously answering questions?!
The train of thought she had just formed for the answer had been scared right back into her head!
Fortunately, after two days in that exam environment, Qiao Sang had gone numb. Even if two Jian Jian Eyes appeared at once, one on each side of her, she could calmly finish her answers.
June 19.
The last day of the High School Entrance Exam's written tests.
After finishing her final subject, Qiao Sang returned home, lay down on her bed, covered her head, and fell asleep.
Her mind had been tense this whole time. Once the exams were over and everything had ended, all she wanted to do was relax and get a good night's sleep.
Who would have thought she would sleep until 7:02 that evening?
When Qiao Sang woke up, her mind felt much clearer. She had never gotten this kind of result from sleeping before.
Qiao Sang leaned against the headboard and looked out the window.
It was completely dark outside, but the moonlight and the city's lights left a faint glow in the night.
The lights in her room were off, and through the crack in the door, she could tell the lights in the living room were off as well. Everything was quiet, and Fire Fang Dog was nowhere beside her.
For some reason, it felt a little lonely. Qiao Sang got up and looked down at the residential complex from the window.
There were quite a few people downstairs at the moment. Children played noisily, couples walked together, and elderly people enjoyed the cool evening air.
Yet Qiao Sang recognized the three figures at the edge below at a glance.
They were her mother, Fire Fang Dog, and Fat Domestic Pigeon.
After quietly watching them for three minutes, Qiao Sang got hungry...
She remembered that before falling asleep, she had arranged to have dinner with Fang Sisi and the others.
Downstairs in the residential complex.
"Fang!"
Fire Fang Dog spotted Qiao Sang at once, cried out happily, and leaped into her arms.
Fire Fang Dog still wore a 15-kilogram Weighted Ring. Qiao Sang's hands sank from its weight, but she caught it steadily.
"Mom, I'm heading out for a bit," Qiao Sang said.
"Okay." Her mother nodded.
Qiao Sang had already told her mother before going to sleep that she was meeting Fang Sisi for dinner, so her mother did not ask anything further.
Twenty minutes later.
Qiao Sang arrived at the hot pot restaurant they had agreed on, holding Fire Fang Dog in her arms.
"Holy shit!"
"Fire Fang Dog!"
Two cries of surprise rang out from Table 27.
Besides Fang Sisi, Lü Siya was there as well.
They had agreed to meet at seven in the evening. Though Qiao Sang was over half an hour late, Fang Sisi and the others forgot to question her because all their attention was focused on Fire Fang Dog.
"You actually contracted a Fire Fang Dog!" Lü Siya said in shock.
"Qiao Sang, that's not fair. You had a Fire Fang Dog and only let us see it now," Fang Sisi said.
She looked at the seemingly well-behaved Fire Fang Dog, wanting to pet it but not daring to.
This was the first time she had ever been so close to a Fire-type Pet Beast...
While eating slices of boiled meat, Qiao Sang asked, "Siya, did you already know I'd awakened?"
Normally, if someone saw a classmate who had not yet awakened holding a Fire Fang Dog, they should ask how the other person had come to hold one, rather than directly saying that they had contracted a Fire Fang Dog.
Fang Sisi immediately fell silent.
Lü Siya, meanwhile, glanced at Fang Sisi and sold her out without hesitation. "Fang Sisi told me two weeks ago."
As expected...
Qiao Sang was not surprised. She should have thought of it sooner.
Fang Sisi had told practically everyone about the old class teacher's hair. Expecting her to keep a secret was less realistic than expecting Fire Fang Dog to climb a tree.
