When Stanford received a report that a senior scholar claiming to be from the Scholar's Tower in the Gabella Imperial Capital wished to meet him, his mind filled with disbelief.

This man called himself Yarvis.
The other had a sharply defined face, high cheekbones, and deep-set eyes, yet a keen light still flashed within them, like an unsheathed blade. He remained constantly alert to every movement around him.
This man called himself Marek, Yarvis's guardsman.
"Yarvis? You're Scholar Yarvis?" When the man claiming to be a scholar gave his name, Stanford rose from his seat in astonishment.
Yarvis returned the surprise with an equally astonished expression. Although he was famous throughout Gabella, the place they were in now was separated from Gabella by the Great Prairie.
Yarvis did not know that the senior administrators within the Arda system were, in terms of the breadth of their information, among the best-informed
