Background / History

Lakeheart Town began as a settlement around the Greiman Family castle on a small lake island. The first Earl of Arda chose the site for its defensive value: residents could retreat into the castle if enemies landed, while the lake served as a natural barrier. By Paul Greiman's succession, the castle had deteriorated substantially despite occasional renovations. 517

When Hansel Abbott first arrived, the town consisted primarily of buildings clustered on the island around the castle. A pontoon bridge, built from specially made boats, connected it to the lakeshore and could be dismantled during an attack. 10

Paul's early reforms reshaped daily life in the town. He prohibited open defecation, promoted household latrines, funded public latrines, banned dumping refuse into the lake, and established trash bins and organized garbage collection. Residents gradually adopted the cleaner environment as a normal standard. 10 77

After Bairdin came under Arda's administration, Lakeheart Town became the joint capital of Arda and Bairdin. Mellon Garnard was stationed there, while decrees for Bairdin were issued from the town. 75

Industrial growth pushed development beyond the island. Factories, including paper, porcelain, and mechanical works, were built on the South Bank because the pontoon bridge could not efficiently handle industrial transport. Immigration and factory employment led the Government Affairs Council to construct extensive housing there. 209

The original pontoon bridge was eventually replaced by a wide stone bridge after land reclamation narrowed the waterway between the island and south bank. With the town permanently protected by a firearm-equipped Army battalion, the former defensive advantage of an easily removable bridge was no longer considered essential. 209

Administration and Political Role

As governance expanded, City Hall was separated from the Government Affairs Council to administer Lakeheart Town itself. City Hall was relocated from the island to the South Bank's new urban district. 328

During Boolgan's rebellion, militia forces attempted to impose martial law, block the city's entrances and exits, seize weapons, and control the central authority after falsely claiming that Paul had been assassinated. Loyalists retook the urban area after the conspiracy was exposed, and Lakeheart Town remained under martial law until the aftermath was resolved. 537 542 559 561

Urban Planning

Sir Smolett was hired to produce a formal plan for the rapidly expanding city. The approved proposal included new South Bank districts for housing, schools, shops, and workshops, as well as wide main roads and efficient sewer systems. 593

The plan required relocation of tombs in the island area, including the Greiman Family mausoleum. Paul accepted the relocation despite Butler Philip's concern for family tradition. 593

Although several names were proposed for the growing city, Paul decided that the original island district would continue to be called Lakeheart Town. 593
