Because Gabella's ballistae had fallen into chaos, the disruption suffered by the advancing Aldo Army soldiers was greatly reduced. They continued their steady advance, closing to within a hundred meters of Gabella's front line.
The Fire Dragon Legion's Fire Crossbowmen began firing. Propelled by flames, the specially made Magic Weapon bolts traced gentle arcs through the air before dropping into the Aldo Army's ranks, creating a dense chorus of whooshing sounds.
Casualties began appearing among the Aldo Army's ranks. These bolts were different from ordinary crossbow bolts; even from over a hundred meters away, they retained tremendous penetrating power, and the flames made them scorching hot.
The Aldo Army soldiers who were hit collapsed to the ground in pain, groaning miserably. Fortunately, medics immediately carried them to the rear on stretchers.
Yet the steady drumbeat never stopped. The Gabellans were incredulous. In their battles against the Holy See, they had relied on the power of their fire crossbows to rout the enemy's charges countless times. Back then, they had believed their weapons were invincible on the battlefield. Yet now, the Aldo People maintained their morale, discipline, and fierce desire to attack even under the assault of their own firepower.
At that moment, the Aldo Army's ranks halted. Row after row of soldiers uniformly aimed their guns forward.
"Fire!"
At the command, the soldiers in the first row rapidly pulled their triggers. Smoke billowed everywhere as dense volleys of Lead Bullets flew toward the Gabellan Fire Crossbowmen.
Though the Gabellan Fire Crossbowmen were protected by light armor, the Lead Bullets' powerful penetration still inflicted devastating casualties. Sprays of blood burst throughout their formation.
The Watchers Legion was equipped with Flintlock Guns, but most of their weapons were Matchlock Guns discarded by the Northwest Legion. Their range and accuracy were somewhat lacking.
