Compared with the other mythological systems, the mythology of South America was fundamentally different.

In South America, people regarded the diseases caused by microorganisms parasitizing them as curses from the gods. There was even a custom of offering such people to the gods as living sacrifices. In the end, beings that had parasitized animals and caused them to change were regarded as divine spirits, with the process seen as the animals being possessed by gods.

In other words, to the people of South America, beings called gods were actually no different from microorganisms. The gods would often parasitize humans, using them to manifest on the earth and even build civilizations upon the land.

When the gods of the other mythological systems withdrew from the earth and departed for higher dimensions, they merely ceased their activities and returned to the lands of the jungle, where they fell into slumber.
