Fang Chen began as a poor youth from Baihe County whose family was vulnerable to the Green Robe Gang. When a matchmaker attempted to arrange his sister Fang Ting's marriage to Zhao Si, he drove her away and resolved to learn martial arts so he could protect his family. Father Fang and Fang Ting supported his decision with silver for training expenses 2.

He entered Hong Decheng's Tiger Subduing Martial Arts School with below-average aptitude. His earliest attempts at the Tiger Subduing Fist were clumsy, but his Proficiency Panel let every completed practice set translate into measurable progress.
