She Was the Light, She Was the Electricity, She Was the Only Myth
County High School.
"Karen, we need to talk."
Jennifer suppressed her anger, feeling deeply violated.
Karen did not answer. She merely looked at Juno with an utterly dependent expression, which made Jennifer's fury burn even hotter.
"Go on."
Juno tugged Karen's hand and said gently, "Talk it out properly."
"Okay."
Karen obediently agreed and followed the furious Jennifer to a corner of the school to talk.
"What's going on? You and Karen?"
Adam was dumbfounded.
Juno was not very tall and had a slender build, while Karen had the classic perfect figure. Standing together, Karen should have drawn more attention, yet in reality, it was Juno.
On top of that, they were both wearing red hoodies, creating an intense visual contrast that was almost absurd.
"Thanks to you, I finally made a best friend."
Juno looked at Adam meaningfully.
"You're welcome."
Adam was utterly confused. Thinking she meant he had gotten together with Jennifer, he asked curiously, "But how did you do it?"
In his eyes, Juno had never been someone good at making friends. Otherwise, she would not have gone so many years without a single real friend. Yet judging from Karen's relationship with her now, they were clearly closer than best friends.
"Trust me, you won't want to know."
Juno smiled mysteriously.
"Huh?"
Adam was startled. Only then did he remember Juno's other identity. Looking at her red hoodie, his thoughts began to run wild, and he could not help probing, "Ahem, Juno, why is Karen dressed like Little Red Riding Hood too?"
"Because she's just like me..."
Juno deliberately paused. When she saw Adam's expression change, she finally smiled teasingly. "We both like red. And she really did play Little Red Riding Hood before."
"Heh, is that so?"
Adam's heart pounded like a drum. He gave a dry laugh and did not dare continue the conversation. At the same time, he secretly resolved to keep a close eye on Karen from now on.
Birds of a feather flock together. Maybe Karen really was mentally ill, just as Jennifer had said...
Damn it!
Why did he keep running into this kind of thing? First Amazing Amy, then Juno, and now Karen. God knew who else he would meet in the future!
Over there.
Jennifer glared at Karen and gritted her teeth. "Why?"
"Why what?"
Karen asked in confusion.
"You and that Juno!"
Jennifer snapped, "I thought we were each other's best friends!"
"I thought so too."
Karen said softly, "But then you ignored me for an entire week, and now you're questioning me more than a month later. That isn't how best friends treat each other."
Jennifer froze.
She had been so engrossed in discussing Transformers and mechanical aesthetics with Adam that she had truly neglected Karen. But ever since they were children, no matter what happened, Karen had always yielded to her. Even if Jennifer was at fault, she would not allow Karen to treat her like this.
"What kind of attitude is that? How can you treat me this way? Have you forgotten who played with you growing up and protected you when other people mocked you? Me!!! You've gone too far..."
Jennifer erupted, while Karen, the person involved, simply watched her quietly.
A month ago, when she had held a knife and prepared to personally slaughter the two demons, Adam and Jennifer, Juno had appeared before her.
After more than a month together, Karen had only one thought in her heart.
Juno was her light, her electricity, her only myth!
The conversation ended on bad terms. Seeing the coldness in Karen's eyes, Jennifer was furious but helpless. All she could do was find Adam and complain to him.
Still shaken, Adam did not dare meddle in Juno and Karen's affairs. He merely gave her perfunctory responses.
Love had always been about hormones and novelty. Once it could no longer be kept fresh, it either transformed into familial affection over time or collapsed because of time.
What Adam and Jennifer had was not love, of course, but it still followed the same pattern of fading novelty.
When Jennifer constantly complained to Adam about Juno and Karen, even demanding that Adam cut off contact with Juno, Adam gradually grew sick of it.
Besides, it was now his senior year, and he had many things to do. Even though his endurance had reached 400 and he could stay up late to make up the time he spent with Jennifer, why should he?
Jennifer was also an experienced woman. She quickly noticed Adam's indifference. As a goddess in many people's eyes, she naturally had her own pride.
Thus, in the quiet drift of things, Adam gathered all his energy and devoted it to preparing for college.
Since he was neither a pay-to-win powerhouse nor a super genius like Little Sheldon or Paige, Adam could only walk the tightrope like every other ordinary student.
SAT scores were of crucial importance, because they were the first hurdle colleges used to filter countless ordinary applicants. Without an absolutely outstanding score, you would not even get the chance for the next interview.
Fortunately, Adam had worked hard enough during his four years of high school. Combined with the broad perspective brought by the information explosion of his previous life and his steadily increasing intelligence, the SAT was no problem at all.
Moreover, the SAT could be taken seven times a year. If you were dissatisfied with your score, you could retake it at any time, then choose the highest score as your final SAT result.
Next came recommendation letters.
Getting a recommendation letter from a famous person—someone powerful, wealthy, a celebrity, or a recognized professional—was definitely a bonus.
Strictly speaking, this also fell under the category of becoming stronger by spending money. But ordinary students still had a chance to get one, such as by happening to know or meet a famous person and currying favor with them for a recommendation letter.
Of course, most people could only ask the school's college guidance counselor for recommendation letters. They were professionals and had more or less some connections with the admissions offices of various universities.
Thus, the quality of recommendation letters from private high schools, which hired staff at high salaries, and public high schools, where people merely coasted along, was once again worlds apart.
Adam first had Little Sheldon help him get a recommendation letter from Dr. John Sturgis.
Then, shamelessly, he asked Gretchen for one from her billionaire father, the richest man in town.
Together with letters from the principal of County High School and the college guidance counselor, that should have been enough.
P.S. Thanks to Snake Tail Is Huge for the tip! Another interpretation of Jennifer's Body is that it is the fantasy of a mentally ill person. There were no demons at all; the real demon was Jennifer herself, and she killed her best friend.
