Dancing with the Devil (Please Vote!)
Smith Family.
"Hi, Karen."
The moment the door opened, a dazzling wash of white light greeted him. Adam forgot Karen's oddness for a moment and greeted her sincerely.
Karen merely glanced at Adam, then stepped aside with an indifferent look before turning and heading upstairs.
"What a little bitch."
Adam frowned, annoyed by her attitude. But remembering that this was the first time Juno had seriously asked him for a favor, he decided to endure it and grumbled inwardly, She really is a lunatic. Maybe she's even a lesbian. Otherwise, why would she treat me like this...
Karen was clearly still upstairs doing her makeup, so Adam wandered around downstairs in boredom.
It was obvious that Karen's family was well-off. The furniture and everything else were quite tasteful, but the house lacked any sense of lived-in warmth. Perhaps it was because her parents worked away from home year-round, leaving Karen alone most of the time.
When Juno had first told him about it, Adam's imagination had run wild. Karen's last name was Smith, and her parents' jobs were so mysterious and elusive—could they be Mr. & Mrs. Smith?
Seeing things now, it was clearly not the case.
Because Adam had already seen the Smith Family portrait.
Karen's father was handsome and her mother stunning, but they were not that famous couple.
"Let's go."
Karen was quick. She came downstairs before long, dressed with striking glamour, utterly lacking the tacky look she had once had. She really was a hidden gem.
"Pick up Juno first," Karen reminded him after getting into the car.
"Are you sure?"
Adam's expression turned strange.
What was this supposed to be?
Who picked up two dates at once?
"Then I'll get out, and you can go pick up Juno."
Karen was decisive, her tone firm enough to leave Adam dazed for a moment.
The girl who had been so obedient around Juno before now seemed to have been nothing more than Adam's illusion.
"Whatever you two want."
Adam could not be bothered to think about it. He hit the gas and drove toward Juno's Home.
To hell with it!
Who cared!
When they arrived at Juno's Home and explained why they were there, Juno's father and stepmother were surprised but exceptionally calm. It was as though every strange thing that happened to Juno had a reasonable explanation, even if they had no idea what that explanation was.
They were used to it by now.
Juno's little sister, meanwhile, waggled her eyebrows and clicked her tongue in amazement, only to be swiftly suppressed by Juno.
The three of them drove to school.
The Class of 1992 prom had already begun.
When they got there, they found that Emmett had once again brought Teddy's best friend Ivy, the same girl he had complained about. Adam smiled knowingly at Emmett's embarrassed, "blushing" expression.
Making do was still better than being single.
Ivy was better than his own two hands.
"Fruit Hard Candy Band has really broken up this time."
Emmett was filled with sorrow.
"As long as you remember them, Fruit Hard Candy will always be there."
Adam patted Emmett on the shoulder.
"That's true."
Emmett did not want to act all sentimental. His spirits lifted at Adam's words, and he bumped Adam with his shoulder, his gaze shifting back and forth between Juno and Karen. His face was full of envy, jealousy, and lecherous curiosity. "What's going on?"
"To be honest, I don't know either."
Adam spread his hands and smiled bitterly. "I'm just a Tool Person."
"Pah!"
Emmett cursed sourly.
Once the music started, Adam saw Juno nudge Karen, then gesture to him. He nodded helplessly and walked toward the unwilling Karen.
Hand at the waist, hand on the shoulder—the basic moves of dancing.
Adam was no novice dancer, but paired with Karen, he still felt uncomfortable. He was nowhere near as nimble as before, stiff as a board, as though he was holding not a beautiful angel, but a devil.
Dancing with the devil!
The phrase echoed endlessly in Adam's mind. The more he thought about it, the more profound it seemed, and he silently gave himself a thumbs-up.
He recalled his previous life, when he had been a struggling nobody. For safety's sake, he had written many suggestive jokes so subtly that no one could understand them. That had disappointed him somewhat, and he had wanted nothing more than to underline the point and remind them, Think about it. Really think about it!
"Stay away from Juno!"
Just as Adam was helplessly immersed in self-admiration, a coldly threatening voice suddenly sounded beside his ear.
"What?"
Adam looked up at Karen, who was right in front of him.
"Stay away from Juno!"
Karen stared straight at Adam, danger flickering in her eyes and making his heart skip a beat.
One look was enough to confirm it—she really was a dangerous lunatic.
He could not afford to provoke her.
"Of course, no problem."
Adam gave an awkward laugh. "After tonight and this summer, I'll be going to Columbia University, while Juno will be going to Harvard University. They're so far apart that we may never even see each other again."
"I'll be watching you."
Karen glared at Adam for a long while before finally looking away. Her gaze fell on Juno, who was sitting alone in the corner watching them, and her eyes showed a trace of struggle.
"Go ask Juno to dance."
"Huh?"
Adam was completely dumbfounded. What kind of move was this? He could not understand it at all.
Still dazed, he was pulled over to Juno by Karen. By the time he came to his senses, the person before him had already changed to Juno.
"What the hell!"
Facing Juno, Adam could not help complaining, "Do you know what Karen said to me?"
"I know."
Juno smiled. "Ignore her."
"..."
Adam's mouth twitched. He felt exhausted and no longer wanted to speak.
"When are you planning to leave for New York?" Juno steered the conversation elsewhere.
"We'll see."
Adam thought about it.
"Then I'll wait for you."
Juno smiled. "You can ride with me then. We'll take turns driving, drop you off at Columbia University first, then head to Harvard University."
"Mm... wait, what?!"
Adam, poor and carless, nodded at first before realizing the problem. "We?!"
"That's right, Karen and I."
Juno said mischievously, "Didn't I tell you? Karen is going to Boston too."
"What is she going there for?"
Adam was stunned.
Karen was a textbook poor student. Forget Harvard University—she did not even have the ability to get into an ordinary college.
"She's going to college, of course."
Juno said as if it were only natural. "Roxbury Community College."
So it was a community college. Adam nodded, then looked at Juno oddly. With an inward sigh, all his doubts vanished.
There were community colleges everywhere, yet Karen had to go all the way to Boston. Karen and Juno really were best friends, just like Xiu and Fors from Lord of the Mysteries.
When the song ended, Juno pushed Adam back toward Karen.
The prom did not last very long. Since it was organized by the school, there were all sorts of rules. Everyone was looking forward to the second party, which would be held at Gretchen's Home, a castle-like villa.
The biggest difference there was unlimited drinking.
That's right!
Although the United States did not allow drinking until twenty-one, that only applied to public places. In private, people could party however they wanted. Otherwise, there would not be the American Pie series.
Naturally, Adam would not miss it.
