What Did I See? (Please Vote!)
Duncan's Home.
"How did you get here?"
Adam stared at Juno, whom Teddy had brought in, his face full of shock.
"Didn't I say before that I'd help you with your studies?"
Juno smiled and began looking around. "Oh, it's pretty clean and tidy. Is this your sister?"
"Yeah."
Adam nodded instinctively, his mind racing. What was going on here?
He had just sent off one formidable character. Before he could even be happy for an hour, an even more formidable one had come after him.
The first could reasonably be explained by his plain, unremarkable looks, but this one supposedly didn't like men...
Could it really be because he wanted to be friends with nine-year-old Sheldon Cooper, and she had set her sights on him?
That didn't seem right either. Sheldon was a child, but Adam himself was only fifteen. Even if he had some unspeakable thoughts, at most he would be a creepy older brother, not a creepy uncle. He was completely outside her hunting range!
Or was it really as she said—out of friendship between classmates, she simply thought he seemed all right and had kindly volunteered to help?
"What are you thinking about?"
Juno watched Adam's shifting expression with interest and teased, "Are you wondering why Juno suddenly wants to help you so proactively? Whether I've taken a liking to you, or whether I have some ulterior motive?"
"It was a little unexpected..."
Adam's eyes widened. He met Juno's gaze, and it seemed as though every thought in his mind was reflected in her lively eyes. His scalp tingled as he gave a dry laugh and nodded.
Juno and his ex-girlfriend Amy were both formidable characters, but they were still very different.
Amy was the type who built herself up through hard work. Otherwise, Adam would never have been able to grow into such a skilled actor around her.
But Juno, standing before him, was a high-IQ natural talent. She could see through your thoughts at a glance, leaving you nowhere to hide. That was terrifying!
So Adam did not dare put on an act in front of Juno. He simply answered honestly, afraid of causing unnecessary misunderstandings or conflicts. That would be a real pain...
"Hehe."
Juno smiled, tilting her neck slightly. Her delicate face still carried traces of "shyness and embarrassment." Her acting was far better than Adam's, and it made his skin crawl. Then she burst out laughing. "All right, I'll stop teasing you. Let me tell you: none of what you thought was right."
"Then what was it?"
Adam's mouth twitched.
"I just think you seem all right!"
Juno sat down beside Adam. As she flipped through his books, she said casually, "There are really too few classmates like you who are willing to help old ladies cross the street and massage old men's backs. And it's not just once or twice, either. Although you're a flirt, you're still a very rare kind-hearted... flirt!"
"Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
Adam did not know whether to laugh or cry, but inwardly he relaxed. It seemed that although he had spent more than half a year doing good deeds with little effect on extending his lifespan, it had not been entirely without benefit.
"Of course."
Juno's lips curved upward. "Otherwise, did you think I'd really taken a liking to you?"
"Of course not."
Adam shook his head with a dry laugh.
"I don't have many friends, and there are even fewer people I consider worthy of being friends with."
Juno raised one of his books and gave it a shake. "My grades are pretty good, and you happen to need help. So, how about it? Do you want to be friends?"
"Well..."
Juno looked very sincere, and her reasons sounded reasonable enough, but Adam instinctively still wanted to refuse. There was no particular reason; it was simply his instinct to avoid harm and seek benefit. Yet he could not think of a suitable excuse, and who knew whether repeatedly rejecting her reasonable requests would anger her.
He did not want her to think he had a guilty conscience or looked down on her. Forget it. If a man did nothing shameful, he need not fear ghosts knocking at his door in the middle of the night. Besides, she would only be an ordinary friend at a proper distance, not a negative-distance girlfriend like Amazing Amy.
"...Wouldn't it be too much trouble for you?"
"It's mutual study. What trouble is that?"
Seeing Adam tacitly agree, Juno's smile became much more genuine. At such a young age, she had already changed five therapists. To outsiders, she was an oddity, a freak. Saying she had few friends was putting it mildly; in truth, she had only ever had one female friend with whom she was neither close nor distant.
"You've reviewed up to here?"
"Yeah."
"Do you have any questions?"
"How did you know?"
"These pages have been flipped through more often."
"Your powers of observation... Then can you guess what I'm confused about?"
"I can't tell that."
"Why not?"
"Everyone understands things differently and has different mental blocks. Some problems can stump ordinary people, while others can stump geniuses. I don't know which kind you are."
"..."
With the help of a genius top student, Adam's learning progress immediately sped up. After all, he had decades of experience from his previous life. It was only 1989 now. There were many things he did not fail to understand; he simply could not adjust his way of thinking.
"You're quite clever!"
An hour later, Juno was somewhat surprised by the study progress of Adam Duncan, the "perennial underachiever." "It looks like if you're willing to work hard, you really can get into college."
"Just get into college?"
Adam, immersed in the joy of deep learning, was feeling a little inflated and said unhappily.
"My mistake."
Juno smiled. "Mm, you should be able to get into a pretty good college!"
"No hope for the Ivy League?"
Adam frowned.
He had not forgotten his goal. To become a top surgeon, every step in the future had to be as solid as possible, and getting into an Ivy League school was the first solid step.
The Ivy League was a higher education alliance made up of eight universities in the United States: Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, Cornell University, and Dartmouth College. It was synonymous with America's most prestigious schools.
"The Ivy League isn't that easy to get into."
Juno reminded him, "Our school is a public high school. Most geniuses go to private schools. They're smarter than you, work harder than you, and have better platforms and resources than you do. Just look up the list of students from our school who get accepted into Ivy League schools every year, and you'll understand how difficult it is!"
"Can you do it?"
Adam suddenly asked.
"Hehe."
Juno merely smiled, saying nothing. Her answer was self-evident.
Although most geniuses went to private schools, not all of them did. There were always one or two who remained in public high school for various reasons. They were the ones supporting the sparse Ivy League acceptance lists each year.
And Juno was clearly one such genius.
"If you can do it, so can I!"
Adam encouraged himself.
"Good luck."
"Look, look! What did I see?"
Just as the two smiled at each other and the barrier between them dissolved, an exaggerated tongue-click suddenly rang out.
