As Adam fiddled with the material of his bulletproof vest, he called Owen's ruthless older brother.

Adam said, "We did everything we could."
"That isn't the news I wanted to hear."
Bald Deck said flatly over the phone, "I wanted them all alive, so they could keep being afraid."

Adam said calmly, "So, are we good now? You won't drag innocent people into this, right?"

Bald Deck said.
"What else can I do if I'm not?"
Adam said blandly. "Are doctors like us, who heal and save people, supposed to spend every day worrying about retaliation from criminals like you and be unable to work in peace?
Don't forget, criminals are people too. And compared with ordinary people, you get hurt at the drop of a hat, so you need medical personnel even more.
