Background / History

Sun Wukong began as an unusually intelligent golden-haired macaque. After secretly receiving a Human Race cultivation method, he gained intelligence, speech, and a longer lifespan but could not properly cultivate it because it was unsuitable for beasts. Following Suiren’s guidance, he spent two years reaching Kunlun Mountain to seek instruction from the Primordial Ancestral God. 70

Yang Hua accepted the macaque into the Primordial Beginning Palace, declared that he was no longer an ordinary wild beast but a demon, and bestowed the name Sun Wukong. 70 He later became Yang Hua’s first disciple, receiving the titles Bestow Demon Emperor and Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 71

As part of his discipleship, Sun Wukong received the Primal Chaos Heavenly Demon Art, Illusion Breaking Golden Eyes, and Myriad Incarnation Technique. Yang Hua then assigned him to spread cultivation methods among beasts and establish the foundations of the Demon Race. 71 He spent roughly nine hundred years traveling and teaching beast races, though he believed he had not fully completed the task. 74

During the Great Shang Dynasty’s political turmoil, Sun Wukong investigated sect interference in the royal succession despite the general rule against cultivators meddling in dynastic change. He subsequently worked with Tian Yan to enforce the Ancestor God’s restrictions on sects. 75 87

Sun Wukong originally appeared as a golden-haired macaque with round eyes, pointed ears, a fur-covered face, thin cheeks, and a compact build.
