Chapter 7: Surgery and Doctor
After the wave of Patient attacks, everyone's expressions were tense.
Shi Wenshan was also quite surprised by Ye Xin's displayed strength.
"You're more formidable than I expected."
He didn't know that when Ye Xin had swung the scissors earlier, she had secretly used Spirit Thread; otherwise, she couldn't have cut off the opponent's arm.
Sensing that things might get tougher ahead, Shi Wenshan took a white card from his person.
"This is a Paralysis Card. If we run into an enemy we can't beat, I'll use it. Then you all attack the target's vital points together."
"Okay." Ye Xin nodded.
The two arrived at the spot where the Patient had appeared earlier and glanced inside.
There was a Cane.
Shi Wenshan went in, picked it up, and handed it to Xuan Ya, who stood outside the door.
"This is for you."
Now all three had weapons.
Although it would be hard to beat someone to death with a Cane, at least it had some attack power.
The four-person squad continued moving forward.
They slowly reached the end of the corridor. Just as they were about to step out, a strange noise suddenly came from above their heads.
Everyone looked up sharply. A Iron Hammer suddenly smashed through the ceiling, and then a head covered in blood poked out.
"Watch out!"
Shi Wenshan shouted immediately.
The figure from the ceiling jumped down, targeting Shi Wenshan again.
Ye Xin raised her hand and flung the scissors out.
Under the control of the threads, the scissor blade shot like a Phantom, stabbing viciously into the side of the creature's neck from the flank.
"ROAR!!"
With a distorted howl, the hammer slammed hard toward Shi Wenshan's head. He dodged hastily, but his shoulder still caught a corner of the blow.
Crack!
"Damn." Shi Wenshan cursed under his breath.
Fractured.
The Iron Rod lashed out. On the other side, Xuan Ya swung her rod as well, smashing it toward the creature's head.
Boom—
The Iron Hammer struck the wall, and the whole building seemed to let out a dull thud. The wall cracked open, revealing concrete and rebar inside.
"Still not dead?"
Ye Xin saw that the monster, completely ignoring the scissors stuck in its neck, leaped straight at her.
She swung both hands, crossing the Spirit Thread in front of her to block the Patient. The creature indeed slammed into the threads, its body surface instantly sliced open with several gashes. But the force of the impact pushed Ye Xin back several meters, and she fell to the ground.
Shi Wenshan smashed an Iron Rod into the Patient's head, knocking it away. Xuan Ya also shouted and began beating the target with all her strength.
The Cane was metal and packed quite a punch. After a few consecutive blows from the two, the Patient began thrashing on the ground.
Seizing the opportunity, Shi Wenshan rushed forward, picked up the fallen Iron Hammer, and smashed the creature's already battered skull to pieces.
[Killed LV3 Patient.] [Obtained: Exchange Points ×5] [Extracting energy...] [Extraction complete. You have received 20% of the Life Energy from this kill, totaling 2.6 units.]
The light was absorbed into his body.
"Phew, finally dealt with it. That thing was fierce."
Shi Wenshan swung the hammer a couple of times, then tossed the other Iron Rod to the middle-aged man.
"Here."
The man caught it clumsily, then said nervously, "Do I have to fight too?"
"You can choose not to. But don't blame us if you don't level up." Shi Wenshan shot him a glance.
The middle-aged man was left with no choice but to fall silent and follow.
The group successfully exited the hallway and began heading toward the first floor.
Nothing happened on the stairs, but after reaching the first floor, Ye Xin's Spirit Thread had already sensed the situation in the room ahead.
There were new Patients.
"Shh."
She made a silencing gesture.
"Sound might bring an attack on us."
Hearing this, the others all agreed and tried to keep their mouths shut.
Sure enough, as long as they stayed quiet, walking was very easy.
Just a few steps forward, a head suddenly poked out from a door in the distance.
Wearing a white coat, hair half-gray, a doctor who looked very old. Seeing the group holding tools, he frowned and said, "What are you two doing? Weren't you told to change clothes and come help? Drop those things and come to surgery!"
His eyes were fixed on Ye Xin and Xuan Ya.
After speaking, the old doctor went back inside the door.
The group exchanged glances.
"Should we go in?" Xuan Ya was a bit uneasy.
Ye Xin thought it over, feeling it probably wouldn't cause any major problems, so she nodded. "I'm going."
"Hey—"
Seeing the girl walk straight in, Xuan Ya quickly followed.
"Won't this cause trouble?"
"Hard to say, but these doctors seem more normal than the patients. Maybe we can get useful information from them."
Hearing this, Xuan Ya was speechless.
This wasn't a game; a wrong judgment could cost lives.
But seeing the girl's boldness, she steeled herself and went in together.
Through the door, looking ahead, there was the operating table in the distance.
A young doctor stood nearby, pointing at a surgical cart in front of him. "Girls, help take this stuff inside. Good luck with the surgery."
"Mm." Ye Xin nodded slightly, stepped forward, and grabbed the cart.
Following the second door inside, she immediately saw the operating table ahead.
The environment didn't seem sterilized.
When Ye Xin reached the side, she saw the patient lying on the table, his face twisted in pain.
One of the doctors was using forceps to hold a terrifying insect, slowly placing it on the patient's abdomen. The moment it touched, the patient showed unbearable pain, struggling wildly. But the cloth in his mouth kept him from making any sound, and his limbs were firmly locked in iron rings.
"You're a bit slow." The doctor turned to glance at Ye Xin. "It's clearly impossible to let an individual extend a comfortable life. This test subject is probably going to fail too. Fortunately, the R-Type Virus research has made a breakthrough. Though most test subjects go mad, a few enter a brief stable state. If the Corruption Pollution problem can be solved, they could even live longer than normal people. But the downside is they suffer constant pain—that's also why they go insane, mainly from the torment."
Ye Xin heard this voice, her expression turning strange.
She saw a festering patch on the patient's abdomen being devoured by the horrible insect, then the doctor picked up the insect with forceps and extracted a needle.
"Prepare to start surgery. Scalpel 1." He held out a hand.
Ding!
[Side Quest: Life Processing.]
[Objective: Cooperate with the doctor to complete the surgery without being discovered as abnormal.]
[Reward: 20 Exchange Points, 5 Life Energy.]
"The scalpel?" The doctor glanced over suspiciously.
Ye Xin was quick-eyed and quick-handed, swiftly picking up a small knife marked with a 1 and handing it over.
Behind her, Xuan Ya's face had already turned pale.
This hospital was actually conducting such cruel experiments, and on patients at that.
No wonder it was called the Dark Hospital.
The most absurd part was that the task required the two of them to play nurses and assist in the surgery.
Especially when she saw the doctors calmly cutting with their own eyes, Xuan Ya almost threw up.
As for Ye Xin, perhaps having witnessed that real-life battle against the Black-Robed Man, she still looked fairly composed.
"Number 8."
The male doctor said again, and Ye Xin quickly handed over a small pair of scissors.
Then, as her expression twitched, the doctor snipped open a certain spot between the patient's legs.
"Ahhh—"
Even with the cloth wrapped around him, the patient cried out in pain.
Ye Xin herself felt phantom pain.
"No anesthesia... that hurts."
Too terrifying.
Too cruel and inhumane.
The needle pierced the blood vessel. Visibly, starting from the limbs, countless blue veins bulged across the patient's entire skin, then turned blood red.
Before long, the patient collapsed completely.
"Done."
Confirming it was finished, the doctor stitched up the wound.
Ye Xin put away the bloodstained tools and, at his request, pushed them into the adjacent disinfection room.
[Life Processing complete.] [Reward: 20 Exchange Points, 5 Life Energy.]
"Send the body to the second floor. Make sure to use supplements—the patients upstairs might have lost control again." A distant doctor called out from across the room.
"Understood."
Ye Xin replied, pushed the cart out the door, and the two male companions waiting in the distance finally ran over.
"How is it, Ye Xin? Your face is pale—don't tell me..."
"A bit of phantom pain." Ye Xin glanced at her own legs. "Anyway, we took part in a surgery and got some information."
She recounted her experience.
"Surgery... so that means the patients we encountered on the second floor earlier were likely all subjected to this kind of procedure. The key issue should be that virus—it might have a madness-inducing effect."
"Virus? Then wouldn't we be infected?" Xuan Ya's face turned green.
"Probably not. Otherwise, how would those doctors dare to expose themselves to that environment? But thinking about it, it's a bit unbelievable that they don't take any protective measures. I feel like the so-called Source of Evil is most likely those doctors."
"Indeed." Ye Xin nodded in agreement.
If the mission target was confirmed to be these people, killing the Source of Evil would be much simpler.
"Let's head to the second floor next. Regardless, it's good to kill as many patients as possible before the real operation—it'll boost our strength a bit." Shi Wenshan tightened his grip on his hammer, signaling everyone to move.
