The Sorceress smiled without speaking, but became even more curious about Shade.
What appeared on the third batch of blank letters were some strange patterns. Neither Shade nor Megan recognized them, but judging from the fact that the locks were all ordinary locks and the letters had been stored in similar fashion, Rotten Eye Barry attached equal importance to all three batches. They were all cover for maintaining his identity as a "gang leader."
So Shade put away the third batch of letters as well, intending to see whether Miss Galina might be interested when he returned. He could not hand them directly to Director Anlos, so it would be best to let the Duchess handle them first.
Besides those three drawers, the other desk drawers contained miscellaneous items such as pistols, bullets, and unidentified potions. Only after further searching the study did they finally discover the safe hidden behind the bookshelf.
After opening the safe, the first thing Shade noticed was more than a dozen black metal pendants of the "Unifier," the same kind he had seen while forcing information out of someone in the tavern stable at the lakeside fishing village.
It was Megan's first time seeing such things, but after examining them, she was certain they were all ordinary items:
"These resemble the Edwards Family crest somewhat. Both are spirals converging inward."
After she said that, Shade took three pendants for research and left the rest to her.
Besides the carefully preserved pendants, the most important things in the safe were naturally Rotten Eye Barry's ledgers. These
