The light came from every physical object within that area; in other words, every object was emitting an intense glow. After grasping the general situation, Miss Belinder had the ordinary people leave first. She asked Miss Matilda to deal with the farm workers who knew what had happened here, while she and Shade continued forward, stopping only when they reached the outskirts of the glowing area inside the shed:

After confirming that they truly had no effect, she tossed two light-absorbing runestones she had personally crafted toward the glow.
