"Third Kind of Fate."
Doctor Schneider thought carefully for a moment.
"How about each of us names a guess?"
Shade nodded.
"Of course. Then I'll go first—promise."
Doctor Schneider shook his head.
"That shouldn't be possible. I've never promised anything. Everything I'm doing now is of my own free will. I think it should be [Luck], the destiny held by that Unicorn Chosen One you mentioned."
Sure enough, he saw the surprised look Shade gave him, and explained:
"Detective, though I'm not as old as Priest Augustus, I'm already in my forties this year. From resolving to study medicine as a boy, to throwing myself into the then still unorthodox study of psychic sciences for various reasons in my youth, to later becoming a Ring Arcanist by accident and surviving that incident.
Then I spent more than ten years pursuing all kinds of Demons. Just when I was about to give up, I met you. And in only two years, I've nearly reached Eleventh Ring, and even successfully balanced the Demon's power with the Hunter's power."
He asked Shade:
"If that doesn't count as luck, then what does? My whole journey has felt like walking at every moment over a thin layer of ice on a lake. Looking back now, I'm amazed I managed to come this far."
Shade still did not think it likely that Doctor Schneider resonated with [Luck]. He merely thought the doctor was very open-minded and did not complain about his experiences at all.
"Destiny has two sides. If it gives you Misfortune, then naturally it will give you a life befitting that Misfortune."
He spoke as they continued onward, listening to the roaring waterfall behind them.
"Then how about we guess Priest Augustus's destiny? We know that he resonated with [Death]."
Doctor Schneider smiled again.
