Before Mr. Lebert could speak, Shade emphasized again:
"I'm proficient in ancient languages. Besides the writing of the Fifth Epoch, I've also studied some scripts from the Fourth Epoch."
This was the bargaining chip he had prepared before proposing a deal with Apna Library. Knowledge was wealth, and the Outlander understood that well. Though his savings amounted to a shabby five-figure sum of Gold Pounds, the "wealth" in his mind was considerable.
"Oh? Writing from the Fourth Epoch?"
Mr. Lebert, who was receiving Shade, spoke with some curiosity:
"Our library does indeed possess some books from the Fourth Epoch, most of which have not been translated into modern language. If you truly understand them, then you may offset the value of that antique by translating books for us. The library has always believed that knowledge and wisdom are the most precious forms of wealth."
He turned to look at the bookshelves behind him:
"I have a book here called Lost Melika, which records information about the Aken Tribe, a cannibal tribe from the Fourth Epoch. There are several lines of ancient writing in it. If you can identify them—"
As he spoke, he intended to rise and fetch the book, but Shade simply extended his hand:
"Library Retrieval."
The old black-covered book flew from the left side of the third shelf on the eastern wall, whooshing into Shade's hand. His nose twitched beneath the mask. His intuition made him feel as though he had touched sticky blood, yet the book itself was very dry. This indicated that the knowledge within was extraordinarily dangerous.
"Is this the one?"
Shade placed the book on the tea table, and Mr. Lebert sat back down in surprise:
"What thaumaturgy was that just now?"
