The Northern Frontier is a largely flat region suited to cavalry warfare, though the Moreland Family’s southwestern forest is too dense for effective control or large-scale cultivation 2.

Political History
Imperial Northern Region
The Redka Empire originally treated the Northern Territory as the homeland from which the ruling Moreland Family rose. It relied on a dispersed feudal structure: at least seventy or eighty barons held northern fiefs, most of them loyal to the Moreland Imperial Family, to prevent Count Zebo from becoming too powerful 102 127.
This arrangement failed when Count Zebo seized control of most of the region and cut the iron supply to the Royal Family and loyal lords, turning a regional rebellion into an imperial crisis 127.
Reiner’s Consolidation
Reiner’s victories against rival northern lords increased his authority substantially. After being enfeoffed as a count, he gained more than ninety baronial vassals in the Northern Territory 191.
The Empress later granted Reiner the title of Grand Duke of the North, including independent judicial authority, military authority, and tax rights within the Northern Territory 413 414.
Independence
Reiner declared the Northern Territory independent, attracting disaffected nobles and commoners from the Imperial Capital while turning Mecalon City into the center of an Independence Day celebration 520. He subsequently styled himself “King of the North” and pressured Imperial Family lords to submit to him 521.
When the Imperial Capital sought peace with Khan Khamier’s Arshan Tribe, Reiner and his principal courtiers viewed the situation as an opportunity to march on the Imperial Capital 636. Following his victory, Reiner declared himself the legitimate Emperor of the Redka Empire 682.
