The convoy had not yet left the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters when a phone call was placed from inside.

The call had been connected and disconnected so quickly that no one had managed to intercept its contents, but they had identified the caller: an agent from the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters.

Yet this middle-ranking official at the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters, a man with what could be called an exceptionally bright future, had chosen to betray the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Why?" the Director asked. He already had the answer in his heart.

He simply hoped that the man before him could offer a more acceptable excuse, such as having been coerced. That would make him feel somewhat better.
